Maryland Science Center Offers Great Opportunities for Student Travel

Educators planning a trip for their students will find the Maryland Science Center, located at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, a great place to visit.

A variety of exhibits will have students and teachers alike wishing they had more time to spend at the Science Center. Or more likely, already making plans to take another trip to spend even more hours exploring all the facility has to offer.

Many begin with Dinosaur Mysteries, where students and teachers will step into the world of prehistoric predators and plant eaters. More than a dozen full size dinosaurs roam a landscape filled with dig pits, a field lab, excavation sites, and other areas of discovery. Students will meet T. Rex and Astrodon and see full size skeletons and casts of fossilized remains, all hands-on.

There are also live animals, including amphibians and lizards, to help students see the connection between past and present. Some students may even agree with scientists who think birds and dinosaurs are related.

Another display at the Maryland Science Center, “Follow the Blue Crab,” is an exhibit focused on the Chesapeake Bay and its relationship to Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic. Featuring live diamondback terrapins, crabs, fish, seahorses, and native plants in aquatic display tanks, the exhibit gives guests a chance to walk the Bay by way of huge full color satellite imagery that takes up a major part of the floor space. By walking across the map, students are able to observe the ratio of water to land, concentrations of population centers, and learn why the health of the Bay is so important for the health of the region.

Also in the Blue Crab display is a huge mechanical crab, an icon of the Science Center. The completely refurbished giant, with waving claws and moving legs, is a family favorite.

In Fossil Quest, those on student tours see evidence of meat eating dinosaurs, raptors, and crocodiles that once roamed Maryland. There is also evidence that giant Sequoia trees once grew in the area, albeit millions of years ago.

Fossils on display include 70 million year old crocodile armor; teeth from a 100 million year old Mosasaur, prehistoric shells of oysters and nautilus as well as cones believed to have dropped from a giant redwood eons ago.

Visitors to the Maryland Science Center will also delight in Kid’s Room, where they can send boats down a river channel, operate a fish cam in a submarine, or dress-up like a turtle. Fun activities such as sending messages through a pneumatic tube on the ceiling abound.

In Newton’s Alley, one of the Maryland Science Center’s most popular exhibits, students get a chance to play a stringless harp. Or touch a cloud. They “see sound” and can stretch a soap film, all by people power.

The highly interactive discovery areas reveal the phenomena of matter, energy, force and motion, all through some of the best demonstrations of Sir Isaac’s principles using active exploration.

In the Our Place in Space exhibit–also home to Science On a Sphere–a large visualization system uses computers and video projectors to display animated data onto the outside of a sphere. The entire exhibit is an animated globe that shows dynamic images of the atmosphere, oceans, and land of a planet, allowing students to imagine gazing upon Earth while suspended in orbit above its surface.

Even beyond the surface of Earth, there are wonders to explore, including data collected from Moon missions and Mars explorations that have been translated into a mix of live presentations and computer simulations.

In Your Body: The Inside Story, Maryland Science Center visitors are able to explore a day in the life of the body, with an emphasis on the sounds, smells, sights, and sensations of everyday life.

Examples include walking through the waking chamber after “sleeping” on a real bed of nails, watching an ordinary bike ride to school morph into thermal imagery of muscle activity, and standing inside the heart and lungs to feel the rhythmic beats and breaths, from head to toes.

In Bodylink, one of three “Link” galleries, students will enjoy a high tech environment accompanied by high touch experiences. They’ll be able to test their nutrition I.Q., monitor their pulse and heart rate as they pedal a stationary bike, or surf the Web, watching video clips of the latest news from the world of healthcare and health science.

This part media center, part discovery room, part newsroom is equipped with Internet-ready computers, media players, satellite television and surround-sound audio systems. Computer and video sources displayed on huge screens offer visitors a unique immersive experience.

SpaceLink, the second of the Link galleries at the Maryland Science Center, is a place where students can “dock” the Space Shuttle or construct a planetary rover. They can also watch NASA’s latest launch countdowns and press conferences or try on a flight suit.

SpaceLink is also home to the Hubble Space Telescope National Visitor Center, where students can keep up with the latest discoveries from this orbiting observatory.

In TerraLink, the third of the Link galleries, students can fly over images of local cities and cities around the world and navigate from low-Earth-orbit to the top of their house using real data. They can even observe and disrupt a forming tornado with their hand.

All in all, the Maryland Science Center is a great place for teachers to bring their students as part of an adventurous educational travel experience.

What to See on a Tour or Vacation in South Africa

In my capacity as the UK Director of Operations for One World Tours Limited, I am often asked about the destinations I have been to, so with this in mind I will endeavour to give a good opinion on those places and offer some helpful advice. Here then, are my top suggestions for sites to visit during your holiday in South Africa.

The beauty of South Africa is remarkable with its an ancient beauty and traditional culture of the African continent. It has an abundance of plants and animals which are unique to this country. Here the visitor will be able to experience the arid savannahs, dried up deserts, lush green undulating hills, the beautiful snow capped mountains and also miles of stunning coastline all within the same country.

Al of this gives the visitor a host of opportunities ranging from idyllic walks in the lovely mountains of the Wine lands, drenching up the sun on a beach on the wild Atlantic coast, fly-Fishing for trout in the Natal Midlands or playing golf on the world’s finest and most beautiful courses. Of course no trip to Africa would be complete without the adventure of a bush safari where you can experience lions stalking their prey or elephants bathing in the waterholes.

With immaculate, white sandy beaches and an incredible backdrop of Table mountain it is hardly surprising that Cape Town and the Western Cape are areas considered to be one of the most beautiful in Africa. Table Mountain is Cape Town’s most famous landmark offering more than 100 scenic ways to climb it. The views from the top in all directions are magnificent and the inspiring feeling of being on top of the world is what makes this such a popular destination. The most popular way to reach the top is by revolving cable car, which transports you to the top in a just a few minutes.

Make sure that you have some warm clothing as it can get very cold very quickly on the top of Table Mountain.

The Cango Caves are located near the town of Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape with the principal cave being one of the country’s finest. The caves contain spectacular hall like openings and grand limestone formations as well as some rather small passages. The smallest passage that tourists will have to pass through is just under 30cm high at the exit.

The Cradle of Humankind, is so called because of the important palaeo-anthropological sites. These site have produced the remains of hominids from over 2 to 3 million years ago making it a World Heritage Site.

The Sterkfontein Valley landscape houses ancient cave system which has over the years revealed fossils dating from about 3.5 to 1.5 million years ago. There is a perfectly tranquil lake which is located about 40 meters under the ground.

Addo Elephant Park has more than 450 elephants other animals include buffalo, black rhino, warthog, eland, kudu and a variety of buck species. The park is open throughout the year and is located an hours drive away from Port Elizabeth. As you can imagine with that volume of elephants the visitor is sure to encounter some of the spectacular viewing in the world.

The Kruger National Park, in north-eastern South Africa is one of the world’s greatest wildlife conservation areas. Home to the big five it is an astounding testament to the unspoilt wilderness of Africa. As well as the amazing experience of observing these magnificent creatures in their own habitat the more adventurous among you will have the opportunity to experience special interest safaris which include things such as photography, bird watching, and star gazing.

There is much more to do in this beautiful country and I am sure there will be something to suit everyone.

Surf Fishing Etiquette

“Sam, they are here!” was all it took to get me on the beach one evening this past week. I had been receiving e-mails and reading a lot of great Fishing Reports online about successful anglers catching stripers from the surf, but hearing those four words from a good friend was like a shot of adrenalin. It did not take me long to pack up, stop to get fresh bunker, a few peeler crabs and before I knew it, I was kicked back in my beach chair anxiously watching every movement of three rod tips.

After about an hour, I saw a familiar truck bouncing down the beach towards me. It was a good friend of mine I had met a few years ago. He is someone who has always been very generous to me when it comes to sharing his experience and knowledge about fishing. He had expressed many times that he was not interested in catching smaller fish; he wanted to catch the “big one”. Before long he pulls his truck up next to mine for a quick chat before heading home.

With a hint of sarcasm, I asked him, “So, did you get that big striper you’ve been looking for?” To my surprise he calmly said, “yep… fifty-one inches”. It took me a few seconds to comprehend what he had just said. “Fifty-one inches”, I exclaimed, “that is your biggest striper, right?” Again, in a calm voice he said, “yep, she was a little on the skinny side, but I could tell she was a big fish right away”. Then, with much anticipation, I asked him to recount the entire event. He politely answered my numerous questions and also told me about the other several large stripers he had caught and released over the past two days.

After many “congratulations” and “you deserved it” I waved goodbye and he left me there to ponder what had just happened. My good friend had finally caught the “one fish” he had been looking for, the fish of a lifetime. Not only did he catch that fish, but he released it. Because of the incredible amount of respect he had for that old striper, he did not even take precious time to get a photo. I’m still not sure if releasing that fish was easy for him or it took an amazing amount of willpower. Either way, I am certainly impressed.

With the larger stripers currently being caught from the Delmarva surf, remember that it is very important to have respect for the fish you catch. There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping your catch as long as it meets the size and creel regulations for that fish. However, if you plan on releasing a large fish, do it quickly and safely. You have to realize this fish has just fought the battle of its life and now, being out of the water, it is unable to breathe. Quickly and safely remove the hook, gently pick up the fish and “cradle” it against your chest. If possible, have someone take a quick photo and then get the fish back into the water.

The best way to make sure the fish survives is to get into knee-deep water and submerge the fish in its natural swimming position. Then, while holding on to the base of the tail gently push and pull the fish back and forth to get the water flowing through its gills. If done correctly, the fish should “kick off” and swim through the breakers. If the fish goes “belly up”, do your best to get a hold of the fish and try repeating the process. Always be aware of the waves, especially when concentrating on releasing a fish.

When surf fishing, having respect for your surroundings is very important and this includes respecting nearby anglers. There are many unwritten rules that surf fishermen live by and abiding by these rules can make a big difference to other anglers.

First of all, I believe most fishermen are superstitious in one way or another; however I think the quickest way to upset any experienced angler is to set up your fishing gear too close to them and their “fishing hole”. Even though it may seem like common sense not to do this, some anglers have a hard time keeping their distance (especially when they just saw you catch a nice fish and then proudly pose for a picture). I have had anglers stop and set up their sand spikes within twenty feet of mine. Not only can this cause tangled lines because of wind or a strong current, it can also be very uncomfortable not knowing the casting ability of your new neighbor. Anglers in general like to have plenty of elbow room. If you find yourself the one who has been encroached upon, it is likely because the other angler does not know any better. If you decide to talk to them try to be patient and polite.

Seagulls are very common on our beaches and you will almost always find them watching you in the distance. They are waiting for you to change baits and will be right behind you to scoop up the scraps. The problem occurs when anglers throw the old bait back into the wash. The birds will fly down to get the scraps and sometimes right into your fishing line. I have found just dropping the old bait will attract less attention than tossing it in any direction. If you are fishing near someone, please do not dump your leftover bait into the water. The bait is likely to drift towards the other anglers and it will attract an unbelievable number of gulls.

Another commonly talked about annoyance occurs while surf fishing at night. Some anglers believe that bright lights, such as vehicle headlights, large fires and lanterns, “spook” the fish. There are many opinions on whether this is a superstition or a fact. Personally, I find it annoying when I have to re-acquire my night vision because of unnecessarily bright lights.

You may hear or read anglers advising others to turn off their vehicle’s headlights while driving by someone’s fishing area; however I feel this is very bad advice. Using headlights on beaches that allow vehicle access is a necessity at night. Depending on the beach, there can be many dangerous objects that are barely visible even with headlights on. I recommend using your low beams and trying your best not to point them directly towards another angler or the surf.

Instead of a large lantern that lights up your entire fishing area, I have found the use of a small headlamp very helpful. If you have a hard time seeing your Fishing Rods at night, you can get the bracelet style glow sticks and attach them to the rod tips.

There are various other “rules” but the bottom line is using common sense and being respectful. Not only will you be able to relax and enjoy your fishing experience, but you never know who you could be influencing.

Autumn Vacation at Breckenridge

When the blazing summertime sun slowly cools as autumn approaches, Breckenridge, Co has a good deal more to offer aside from just counting down the days till you break in your new skis. Sure, activities like white water rafting, Fly Fishing and sun tanning that needs warmer days may likely dwindle as the air gets nippy but that doesn’t mean one should abandon outdoorsy activities completely. Colorado can never rival the gloriously famous fall foliage of the plains of New England and along the Midwest, but there is certainly an abundance of colorful foliage nonetheless from the wondrous aspen tree.

Aspen trees are abundant in the Northern Hemisphere, extending south at high altitudes in the mountains. Aspen trees inhabit the Rocky Mountains and colonize mountain towns like Breckenridge. The Quaking Aspen, as it is famously known for its tear-shaped leaves of bright green that turns to spectacular tints of red, yellow, and almost gold color. The aspens quaking leaves got their name because of the unusual ability of the leaves to flutter and twist flexibly as the wind passes through it, thus making an equally unusual and intriguing sound. Standing under a cluster of the tree, one would experience a calming feeling, filling the senses with wondrous color of reddish-brown, yellow and gold while they whisper their magical sounds in your ear. It is greatly suggested one should spend as much possible time under these trees. Activities such as an intimate mountain picnic, or reading a favorite book, cloud watching, or just plain old leaves watching are always good excuses to prolong time spent under the magnificent trees. Surely someone who enjoys photography will find themselves drawn to this

Finding the Quaking Aspens is as easy as getting in your car and getting into the 1-70 toward Breckenridge. One will surely find an engorging view of the mountains lined with the changing colors of the leaves. Still, it will entice you more to take a closer look, so go ahead and take a long hike on well-treaded trails or better yet, for the more adventurous and adrenalin charged, get on a bike or make it a perfect excuse to get lost while finding new trails. Chase the fleeting colors of aspen and fill your senses with the sight and sound of the aspen groves.

Don’t blink! You just might miss the moment. Like clockwork, mid-September is the perfect time to go and see the trees. Be sure to bring appropriate clothing, it’s almost always a guarantee that a snow storm will hit before Halloween comes, as the weather gets colder the sooner it is the trees will loose their leaves. In addition, particularly dry summers make the leaves leave sooner. Nonetheless, aspen trees magnificent leaves never disappoint, the magnificent change will surely happen around this time. Aspen tree-crazy Colorado’s local television station provide continual updates on the leaves status and prescribes the best time, days and places to enjoy their splendor.

Don’t limit yourself with just autumn, you can visit Breckenridge Colorado all year round. Enjoy the aspen covered mountains. You’ll still find plenty of warm fall weather to enjoy the town and its equally warm people. If you find yourself unoccupied while waiting to try out your new skis, go on a road trip to Breckenridge, Colorado and bask in the golden shimmer of aspen leaves fluttering in an autumn breeze.

Christians, The Image (Symbol) of the Fish in Your Worship?

How Many of YOU actually know and really care as to the Origin of This?

(Deuteronomy 4:15-18) 15 “And YOU must take good care of YOUR souls, because YOU did not see any form on the day of Jehovah’s speaking to YOU in Ho′reb out of the middle of the fire, 16 that YOU may not act ruinously and may not really make for yourselves a carved image, the form of any symbol, the representation of male or female, 17 the representation of any beast that is in the earth, the representation of any winged bird that flies in the heavens, 18 the representation of anything moving on the ground, the representation of any fish that is in the waters under the earth;

The origin of the Fish symbol….that some Christians put on bumpers

http://www.thewordsofeternallife.com/fish.html

The Popes Mitre Hat…..

http://www.thetruthishere.com/dagon.html

That is fascinating isn’t it. Someone has borrowed my Hislop’s Two Babylons so that is interesting. The Dagon-like mitre is one I knew well but the fish symbol connection is one I hadn’t clicked on in that way.

Symbols can be so dubious, people do really have to understand what they are doing if they use them.

Trout Fishing In Auckland

flight. Other Auckland flights are indirect, via Singapore, Far East or Asia and offer very competitive prices. The rates and listings on ongoing promotions and cheap flights to Auckland offered by almost all airlines can be viewed at Travelhouseuk.co.uk.

The Auckland Fishing Region offers a wide diversity of fishing opportunities with many fresh water lake and river fisheries. Most amazingly, there are about seven lakes within one hour of Auckland City that get regularly stocked with trout. Wild trout are abundant in the Mangatawhiri and Mangatangi reservoirs. Also, there is good trout fishing in the Coromandel Ranges with most rivers having easy access and high scenic values. As there is abundance of water reservoirs, organized fisheries and many choices in easy approach Auckland provides, with out a doubt, the bestest fishing safaris there is.

The experience gets even splendid with the two huge harbors enfolding an environment that’s alive with cultural excitement and sea-flavored challenges. Most importantly, the locals are very friendly and helpful welcoming you with generous smiles.

What makes Auckland outshine among many of the fishing regions in the world is the fact that it has clean rivers and lakes perfect for freshwater Fly Fishing, salmon fishing or trout fishing. One of the many well known regions for fishing is along the Hibiscus Coast, located on the east of the Auckland. The Orewa Beach, hosts many fishing experts from round the globe and makes a bustling commercial heart of the beautiful Hibiscus Coast. Also, in the Auckland region, North Shore City (informally the North Shore or just The Shore) is an alternate spot of the same standard and splendid view that gives you wider choices. Also you can visit each of these fishing regions, a day at a time and have an economical yet exquisite holiday. The North Shore city is surrounded by sea with an unbroken 140-kilometre urban coastline.

Further south to Auckland, there are numerous spring-fed trout streams in the South Waikato, and many backcountry fisheries throughout the King Country including the headwaters of the Waipa, Whanganui, Whakapapa, and Awakino Rivers. The Waikato River has an abundant brown trout population, and the hydro-lakes provide excellent lake fishing. Some fisher men recommend these regions as the fist to be explored and guarantee that you will catch some really big trout to take memorable photos with or stuff and display in your drawing.

However, is you are looking for coarse fisheries; most lakes north of Hamilton, including Lake Pupuke and Hamilton Lake is a good place to start with. Good coarse fishing is also available in the lower Waikato and Whangamarino Rivers.

Fishing in Auckland is a wonderful experience. Actually it’s right to say that it’s far more than fishing only, here you can marvel at the beautiful surroundings, the mountains, the splendid landscape, and the marvelous lakes and also get some catch some trout for your lavish dinner.
