Czech Nymphing – Fly Fishing Flies Selection

Czech Nymph Fly Selection

There is one essential thing that the Fly Fisherman will need when czech nymphing, that is heavy flies! Usually using a team of 3 flies on droppers with the point fly being the heaviest fly.

Cased Caddis – The Prey

Caddis Flies are widespread across Europe wherever water is available, either static or running. However, the adult is a strong flyer and can move some distance from ponds, streams and rivers, especially as it is attracted to light.  However it is the larvae form that is a key part of the diet for fish such as trout. The larvae which make a “case” in which to live using small stones, sand, pieces of leaves and all glued together with a silk lining inside. The silk is spun with a secretion from labial glands (around the mouth) like moth larvae. When full-grown the larva pupates in the case which stops being mobile and may be glued down to a rock.

The cased forms feed on vegetation whilst the caseless forms tend to be either carnivorous or detritivores. The predatory ones are those free living. The web-spinning, caseless larvae may create a silk tube in which to live whilst those in moving water spin the web between stones. This web may trap small invertebrates drifting with the current. This invertebrate drift, as it is known, is an abundant source of food as the current constantly dislodges animals living on the bottom of streams and rivers. Many of these caseless caddis larvae are associated with particular speeds of flow. However, much of what they catch will just be drifting detritus and other organic particulate matter on which the larva will feed (hence detritivore). Some particulate matter will be drifting plankton. Those larvae in especially fast flowing water, e.g. Hydropsyche, will have toughened upper parts to the thoracic segments (thickened external skeleton is refered to as being sclerotised). The larvae have their abdomens safely in the silk tube but the front section of the body protruding into the current. This sclerotisation may be an adaptation to protect them from small stones and other material hitting them.

It is this caddis that is one of our primary fishing imitations when czech nymphing. Below are different imitations that can be used in descending weight order, with the heavyweights of the czech nymphing world described first.

Czech Bottle Fly – Super Heavyweight Flies

Czech bottle nymphs are the “bruisers” of the fly fishing world. Designed to hold botom in the fastest of waters a czech bottle nymph is a uniquely designed Fishing Fly.  The Bottle Fly is a complete fly, designed in the shape of a bottle and is available in 2.2gm, 3.4gm, 4.4gm and even 5.5gm weights. The fly is manufactured from pre-made moulds which are tied very simply, the bottle is rolled in glue and sand is rolled onto the fly, a hackle is then simply tied to the front. The finished fly is identical to a caddis in its nest described above. The beauty of this fly being that it will hold bottom or take a team of flies to the bottom of the fastest of rivers. We use this for sea trout frequently as it can be used to hold a snake fly low in the fastest of waters!

Traditional Czech Nymphs – Heavy Flies

These are the more “traditional” czech nymphs used around the world. These are still a heavy fly, often tungsten weighted to keep the fly low in the water.  Czech nymphs are available in a range of colours, from pea green to cream and red, from hares ear and amber to sparkle and orange. They key with these colours is actually that the czech nymphing technique is forcing the trout to make a rapid decision, fast water with stimulating colours is often deadly.

A technique I frequently use is to use a heavy fly, often a bottle fly on the point with a natural colours czech nymph on one dropper and a nymphs with colours on the second dropper. Using this technique you can see what the trout are eating before focussing on specific colours.

Goldhead / Beadhead Flies

These are the “lightweight flies” used in czech nymphing. The Goldhead or Beadhead fly has a small bead which gives it weight, ideal in slower rivers when czech nymphing and frequently used as an alternative dropper.

Standard Nymphs

Do not forget to truly work a team of droppers, there is nothing to stop the fly fisherman using a standard caddis, nymph, stonefly or other fly on a dropper when czech nymhing, the key is that it needs to be kept low and close to the river bottom.

Accommodation

Accommodation

Travelling to New Zealand offers up opportunities to indulge in a number of once in a lifetime experiences, from skydiving above New Zealand’s dramatic scenery to Flyfishing or huge trout in gin clear water. With so many fantastic New Zealand attractions to fill your day with, it’s very important to make sure you can find the right New Zealand accommodation to help you get a good nights sleep.Whether you’re looking for a touch of New Zealand luxury, or more inclined towards backpacker hostels, you’ll easily find the right New Zealand accommodation for your needs when planning your New Zealand travel adventure. With a smile around every corner, New Zealand is home to some of the world’s best hosts, and they’re all highly qualified in helping you make the most of your stay in their ‘slice of paradise’.

here is no doubt that travelling trends are fickle and hard to form long-term forecasts from, but they are not only useful indicators, but sometimes have a major impact on the holiday accommodation industry itself. We know that luxury travel has declined, British Airways suffered a 9% decline of its long haul flights and this could be interpreted as an indicator that luxury accommodation may well also be hit. Indeed, if Mariott International (owner of the Ritz Carlton hotel group) could be taken as a barometer, its third quarter profit in 2008 fell by 28% (The Wall Street Journal digital network). If the prediction of Niel Pedersens, Managing Director of the Supranational Hotels, is right, he foresees that “in 2009 hotel revenues will typically drop 20% with five star market hardest hit” (PricewaterhouseCooper). All of this points to 2009 being a very challenging year for high end travel & accommodation. It is within this context that it maybe important for the luxury hotel & the entire holiday accommodation sector to re-think ways of strengthening and sustaining areas of their profitable business. The more luxury and middle range hotel providers may not only need to make cuts across the board, for example, but also look at ways of holding on to their existing ‘loyalty” customers and make shrewd selective investment decisions. For less high end hoteliers, one method may be to think about ways of re-branding their economy accommodation offers, since it is budget accommodation that many holiday makers are looking for in hard times.

Hostels Hostels in Dublin are available to provide warm service and accommodation to both students and travellers. They provide economical and budget accommodation to backpackers or to those who are on budget vacation. Hostels also provide an ideal accommodation for students, and have the facility of letting you choose whether you want to have a separate room or are comfortable in sharing a large room with other people. A list of popular hostels in Dublin, Ireland is given at Dublin Events.

Best Winter Fly Fishing: A Guide To Locations And Fishing Flies

This winter, when everyone else is headed for cover in their homes, the adventurous Fly Fisherman is headed out into the crisp rushing waters to take advantage of some of the most exciting fly fishing of the year. If you’re the type who doesn’t let winter get between you and fishing, then pack your tackle box with an assortment of fishing flies and try out one of these choice winter locations.

Whistler, Canada:
Get your recipes out for wild steelhead, salmon, rainbow trout, and char, because that’s what you’ll be coming home with after a fly fishing trip to Whistler, Canada. Temperatures here in the winter months range between 35 degrees and 46 degrees Fahrenheit so pack your thermals! As for packing your tackle box, some good bets for fishing flies are green highlander, the Green Butt Skunk, and the Thunder and Lightning.

Eureka, California:
Needs something a little warmer? Winter temperatures in Eureka rarely dip below 45 degrees. There are 6 Fly Fishing Rivers in this little Northern California town: The Smith River, The Klamath River, The Trinity River, The Mad River, The Eel River, and the Van Duzen River. Each has its own unique qualities, but each is rich with steelhead. In these rivers, you’ll want to pack plenty of fishing flies that appeal to these hungry fish including the Black Bear Green Butt, Black Dose, and the Orange Body Bomber.

Lake Creek, Alaska:
If you’re dreaming of reeling in some of the biggest, most beautiful salmon in the US, you’ve got to get out to Lake Creek Alaska. In these lakes you’ll have the opportunity to catch huge King Salmon, Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, Rainbow Trout, and Northern Pikes. Pack lots of different fishing flies but be sure to include sinking flies like nymphs and dry flies.

Taupo Region, New Zealand:
If you’re going to take a fishing trip during the winter, you may as well go big! New Zealand is an outdoor lover’s paradise, with some of the most amazing scenery anywhere in the world. Wintertime fishing in New Zealand is best in the Taupo region. This area is believe to be where the largest number of rainbow trouts in the world spawn. For fishing flies, you’ll want to pack lots of nymphs, particularly pheasant tail nymph, hare and copper nymph, and various forms of caddis.

Sure, it’s cold and there are fewer hatches and therefore fewer fish in the winter. But those that are there are out are practically begging to take hold of a juicy-looking Fishing Fly. So start dreaming, find your ideal spot, load up on fishing flies and set out on an adventure to break up those long winter months. If nothing else, you’ll come back with some great fishing stories.

Tips in Making Tippet Knots for your Fly

It’s described to be the smallest diameter of the portion of the tapered leader. To avoid confusion, the leader is the material located between the fly and fly line. It’s a material made of monofilament and is usually tapered so that the fly doesn’t mess with the fly line when it is thrown.

Now that were clear on what tippet and leader is, let’s go to how to tie a fly to the tippet. This may seem like a simple task to do before Fishing but there are times when tying could take forever. Expect for days like these to happen and just in case it does, be sure you have few fly-tying-to-tippet knowledge up your sleeves.

You can also practice tying a fly to your tippet at home before you conduct a fishing activity outdoors. You can use an ordinary rope or a clothesline you found in your house. This step is important because when you start tying both ends of your leader and tippet, you need to make sure that the diameter or space movement is just right for your fly. When you first practice, you can start using a string with a larger diameter just so you get the hang of tying both open ends.

To avoid deformity, you can use oil or similar liquid to moisten the knot. The final step in tying a fly to the tippet is done by trimming or cutting the loose ends you used for tying the knot but leave an allowance. When you do this, make sure you leave an allowance of about 1/8 inch so the knots that you made won’t easily disjoin.

After you have done the tying part on a practice rope, you can try tying real materials which are the tippet and leader. Make sure that you don’t tie up the two too tightly because it’s important for it to have a space for movement. And lastly, whenever you’re ready, you can now test your knot right before fishing to make sure that the knot won’t slip. If it does, you can easily cut the knot off and make another one.

Fly Fishing Lures – 6 Tips On Crafting Your Own

Many fishermen find a way to take their hobby of angling to the next level by making a strong personal statement about the bait they use: yes, I’m talking about people that make their own fly fishing baits by hand and make the winter evening a happening one by doing so! Tying your own flying fishing lures is an easy enough task that can be given a personal touch with the freely available kits in the market that allow you to put your stamp on the baits you tie; besides this, you can also design patterns you particularly like or want to be known by as regards the flies you make for hooking those prize catches like bass and trout when warmer months come over you! Thus, those that advocate making your own lures are actually prescribing an interesting and fruitful past time for avid anglers – even newbies can be successful when tying a Dry Fly Fishing bait- it’s that easy!

Easy Way to Make Dry Fly Fishing Lures

The best way to make an easy dry fly fishing bait is to put together all the supplies you will require, including a compact grip for holding the hook, a more basic one, a line and perhaps, tiny feathers or coarse deer or elk hair. You can also substitute this animal hair with synthetic fibers you can pick up at sports stores – ask hackle barbs and it should do the trick!

• Put the hook in the grip with its curved end held in a vice-like hold and the stem side facing away; with the forefinger of the opposite hand held along the this shank of the hook, start winding the line over and over again, by gripping it as near the bend as possible. You should ideally be able to see a good portion of the hook peeping through the thread and when you reach the end, change the directing you are wrapping the thread in a cross-over pattern over each loop, so it forms an ‘X’ pattern. On reaching the first binding of the line, let your finger slip away so the line hangs and other items stay put!

• After measuring the material for the tail, snip off the extras keeping it the same length as the shank measurement with a little extra for tying it to the hook; now’s the time to loosely tie the animal hairs or hackle barbs so they are smack against the wings near the middle of the hook shank Next, pull the line tight to the opposite side so the bundle of hair moves towards the top of the hook-bend and fasten this with additional thread-wraps.

• If you want a thicker portion for the body of the bait, ‘dubbing’ is required: you can do this by twisting thread round the hook shank, giving it a specific shape, taking care to begin winding at the back of the wings and tapering it off at the tail-end.
• Whatever your choice of hackle tips, trim them to your chosen length (same as shaft of the hook) and keeping an angle from middle of feather shaft to side of the hook, start working downwards so you end up wrapping up the front of it. Keep feather straight and wind more till you can push it as upright as possible; wrap at the back of the feather too so the wings stand straight up as well. Do the same on the opposite side so wings are carefully spread-out.

• If you like more decorations, place more hackle feathers to the lure-front and remember, the finer your feathers in the lure, the further it will fly across – so 3to 5 wrap-arounds should serve you well!

• To finish off, wind the line a few times so the bobbin falls through the loop, then pull tight to secure the fly you are tying – fastening securely will ensure it does not come loose while fishing.

Crappie Fly Fishing – Can You Catch Crappie That Way?

Are you a fan of fly fishing wondering if you can catch crappie that way? Or maybe you are an avid crappie fisherman and want to know of new methods and techniques for catching these favorite fish. Either way, crappie fly fishing is becoming more and more popular and if you’re interested, you can learn how to do it for yourself.

Crappie are some of the easiest and most popular fish to fish for in the United States. There are two main species: the white crappie and black crappie and both types are found in different parts of the country.

Time has brought us many new tools and techniques for catching crappie. There are also many new lures that work great at enticing the crappie to bite. Fly fishing is a great way to present your bait to the crappie and entice them to bite. It’s smoother and less likely to scare the fish than other types of bait casting. If you like the idea of crappie fly fishing, you’re going to need to learn to go about it the right way. Here are some tips and ideas to try to help you.

Preparing for Crappie Fly Fishing

Before you can play a fly fishing crappie trip, you need to have the proper supplies. If you don’t already know how to Fly Fish or have a Fly Fishing Rod, you’re going to want to take some time to try to learn this first. Get some lessons, practice on your lawn or whatever you need to do to get in the groove before heading out on a crappie fishing trip. Once you feel confident enough to try fishing in the real waters, you need to pack your tackle and supplies. You also need to learn about the area you are fishing at. Here are some ways to prepare.

So how can you get ready for a crappie fly fishing trip? Just like any other crappie fishing trip, you need to prepare by learning as much as possible about where you will be going and the weather and more. You can get Fishing Reports of the lake or body of water you are fishing in if possible to help you prepare. If you’ve been to the body of water before it will help you plan for the best spots to try some fishing. Crappie fly fishing is different from deep water crappie fishing so you need to try to go at a time and season when the crappie will be fishing essentials to the list but this is a great place to start.
Crappie fly fishing is probably most easily done in the spring when the crappie are spawning and easily biting and when you can wade in the water at comfortable temperatures for you.

Techniques for Crappie Fly Fishing

If you’re going fly fishing for crappie, you need to know the proper techniques to help you reel them in every time. The unique thing about a Fly Rod is that it allows you more opportunity to gently place the bait where you want it so that it does not upset or startle the fish.

Accessories For Fishing Products Shopping

When people go to a major retailer, they are looking for find accessories for fishing products shopping by going up and down the sporting good aisles, or finding those items drastically reduced on the clearance aisles.

Some of the accessories for fishing products shopping can be done in an orderly fashion because all of the items are by type and are very easy to access. One of the most convenient accessories that people purchase at a mass merchandising retailer is a fishing license. These licenses can be purchased for strictly saltwater or fresh water fishing, or for a large price, be purchased to cover the combination of the two types of fishing that will be done.

When people turn to the Internet to do their accessories for fishing product shopping trips, they find a whole new world in front of them. They might find accessories that were meant to accessorize items for bait, or they might find accessories necessary in a good book. There are many opportunities to find accessories for fishing on the Internet and if you know what category the items goes with there should be no problem finding it.

There are accessories for fishing products shopping that cover Fly Fishing, sports fishing, ice fishing and trolling. There are accessories in the form of handy knot tying tools, and a multitude of listings for lines, nets, and bait that can be used. Some of the accessories cover maps of large lakes, and every other area that fish swim in that can be accessed by boats.

There are sporting Fishing Charters that have all of the accessories to fish that a person can ask for, and you can schedule a fishing charter to depart at any time you want it to, day or night. The accessories for fishing products shopping makes fishing seem very convenient, because there are electronics that can be used to tell you where fishing are swimming. There are even video games on the market that teach children how to go bass fishing, and how to lure them onto the fishing line.

Some of the more convenient accessories for fishing product shopping experts recommend, are fishing rod holders that will keep the novice fisherman’s rod out of the water. These fishing accessories are generally in spike form and with a good push they will form an anchor with a hole that the fishing pole will fit in snuggly.

When looking for accessories for fishing products shopping for reels will be the hardest chore. There are many brands, and many styles to select from. Some of the mechanisms on the reels require a light touch, and others require a combination of movements to ensure that your cast goes far out into the water. These reels can be made of plastic or steel, and some of them can be quite hard to reel in.

Other accessories for fishing products shopping should cover bait containers and fish attractants. The bait containers are immersed into the water, and are generally hung off the sides of piers or along side a boat. They are made to supply oxygen and water to small minnows that fisherman use as bait. Fish attractants are popular because they are a liquid lure that attracts fish to the area where you are fishing.

Learning the Different Types of Fly Fishing Lures

Learning the skill of fly fishing is no easy sport for every angler. It involves angle precision in order to achieve the target position of the artificial flies. Fly fishing is almost a game for many because interested anglers are challenged to catch many different fish species with use of the Fly Rod by imitating insects to lure the fishes. The success of fly fishing depends on many factors and one factor is the fly fishing lure. Imitating insects are done by attaching lures or flies into the fly line to be thrown to the water. This imitation of flies can lure the fishes and eventually trap them and catch them.

There are different types of fly fishing lures or flies and each are listed below

Wet fly This type of lure imitates aquatic insects below the water surface. Meaning this type of lure design are the patterned after drowned insects.

Streamer Lures

This is a type of lure that is a form of wet fly lure. This type is designed to imitate small fishes that are being eaten by large fishes.

Dry Fly

This type of lure is designed to imitate adult stage of many aquatic insects. The lure should be able to ride on the water surface smoothly to make it almost real and close to insects that falls into the water such as beetles and ants.

Nymphs Lures

This Lures imitates the larval form of aquatic insects. This is a special form of the wet fly lure.

Surface Lures

This are also called bass poppers. This type of lured design imitates frogs or mice. They are made from bright colors that are attractive to large fishes such as Northern Pike or Bass especially when they cause commotion due to water movement.

Lures or Flies may be bought in the market or can be self-made. Making flies or lures is a skill and many anglers are learning to make their own lure instead of buying in the market. They are up for the challenge of making the difficult yet best flies to lure the fish close and eventually fall trap to it. Lures may be made from feather, fur or light cloth and tied together with a tie specially made for making Fly Fishing Flies. There are many books or videos providing step by step procedure in making the lures. One just has to follow them properly in order to make the best lure to catch fishes.

Fly Fishing guide; Finding the Right Fly Fishing Instructional Book

Looking for a new fishing guide? There are plenty of guides out there but by now you realise that most are too complicated to work out. A good Fly Fishing Guide should be easy to read and most of all…. WORK!

Fly fishing is a skill that can come very easily if you have the right information, and you will find that unless you do, there is going to be a very steep learning curve.

Take some time to make sure that you have the right Fly Fishing For Beginners guide. Starting off with good information to help you get the fish you need is essential!

The first thing that you need to think about when you are thinking about picking up a fly fishing instructional book is what the expertise it assumes that you have. A Fly Fishing Book that is geared towards someone who has already worked out the mechanics is going to be less than helpful to you, and one that is meant to be read by experts in the field might as well be Latin!

The truth is that getting the right fly fishing for beginners guide, one that will start you off on the right foot, is essential. Remember that you are not going to get the results that you are after unless you start with a solid foundation, you are going to be lost.

A good fly fishing instructional book is going to help you in many ways. First, it will tell you about the form that you need to cultivate. Have you ever seen an experienced fly fisher cast into the water with grace and skill? That could be you as long as you know some very important tips on how to place your cast.

Far too many people think that they can stumble on the right cast technique simply by imitating others, but unless you have good information on how to achieve this, you are going to find that there are many things that simply will not gel for you.

Also remember that a good fly fishing for beginners guide is going to teach you more about your quarry.

The fish that you are looking for are not going to jump on your hook, but sometimes you will be surprised by what a difference even a small change in technique or location can make for you.

Take a moment to really think about what you are doing and what your success rates are. If you have wondered why the fish are not biting for you, now is the time to change it. Take some time and make sure that you are thinking about what separates you from the star Fly Fishers out there.

For many people, fly fishing is their chosen method of relaxation and accomplishment. It is as much an art as it is a sport, and no matter how you feel about it or what kind of investment you want to make in it, remember that the best piece of fly fishing kit you can invest in is a good fly fishing guide.

Fly Fishing for Trout – Casting or Hunting

Fly casting is a skill that most fly fishermen would probably consider the most integral skill of Fly Fishing For Trout. Certainly it is the most recognizable trait of fly fishing.

BUT, if catching fish is as important to you as a great looking cast is, then you may actually need to be careful just how much casting you do.

Fly fishing has far more in common with hunting than it does with other forms of fishing. This is because trout are such a timid creature and are so easily spooked. Although it is not such an issue if you are fishing deep in large bodies of water or in wide, fast flowing streams, it is still for this reason that casting can also be your worst enemy when trout fishing.

The classical ‘Long cast’, although a beautiful thing to behold, and even more beautiful to perform, does have it’s limitations. It was designed to deliver a lure to a timid quarry, who would be spooked by splashing sinkers or floats or any of the traditional fishing equipment and tackle generally used for other, less discerning species. The whole concept of doing this with a whip-like rod and line was indeed an ingenious one.

Trout, and particularly Brown Trout, see everything. And the bigger the trout, the more they see. The Fly Fisherman standing plain view false casting is an obvious predatory threat and will cause a fish to disappear into the depths, without you even knowing the trout was ever there.

To catch good, wild trout in smallish or still waters you must become an ambush predator and learn to think like a hunter. This, the element of surprise, is one of your greatest skills when fly fishing for trout. Believe it or not, even above good casting skills.

Dressing to be reasonably well camouflaged, keeping low and not making any fast or large movements, all play a role in not alerting a potential target trout to your presence. Even making sure you don’t step heavily on the ground as you approach the fishing spot, keeps your footsteps from resonating through the water. Sound travels very well under water, particularly for a creature who has receptacles designed to hear within an aquatic environment.

Without a doubt, you will have to cast, and the better practised you are at casting with a Fly Rod, the less movement you must make to get your fly into the position you want it. So there is a good argument for spending time casting, just for casting sake. This is best done in an open place, preferably over water if you have the luxury, like a dam or lake, but anywhere that you are not going to catch any unwanted items will do to improve your skills.

If you want to be successful, don’t just trudge up to the waters edge and start casting out into the middle of the lake or stream. The bulk of the aquatic life that the trout source as their food items are usually located towards the edges of the water, and near to the aquatic plant life also.

With this in mind, the trout will more likely be keeping as far out of reach of their own predators as possible, while maintaining a presence (cruising in still waters, on station in faster waters) close to their preferred food source. Larger fish preferring deeper water for security, and structures or irregularities for potential dietary supplies.

5 Types of Fly Fishing Flies

Although most flies represent water insects, a terrestrial fly is made to imitate a land insect that has fallen into the water. The two most common terrestrials that are imitated for fly fishing are the ant and the grasshopper.

Although there are hundreds of  types of flies used for fly fishing, most of them fall into five specific categories, or types.  These types are dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, streamers and buck tails, and terrestrials. The main purpose of the fly is to imitate an insect that the fish wants to eat.

A dry fly imitates a natural insect that is floating on the top of the water. Fish are very sensitive to any motion of their water and how currents move the insects they want for food. In fly fishing, if a dry fly is moving even slightly against the current, the fish will have nothing to do with it. The fly  may look like something the fish recognizes but it is not acting the same an insect would. The fish recognizes it as something foreign in the water and leaves it alone.

In fly fishing, a wet fly is imitating a drowned, or drowning,  natural insect and is fished below the water surface.  No one is sure if the wet fly is seen as a drowning adult insect or a nymph from the perspective of the fish. Most fly fishermen today seem to believe that it is seen as a nymph. Because of this less and less wet flies are being sold. Wet fly fishing is the oldest form of fly fishing. It dates  back to descriptions of the early Macedonian people.

A nymph is the stage between an egg and the adult in the life cycle of an insect. In fly fishing, flies that resemble nymphs are growing popularity. The nymph fly is just below the surface of the water. When a fish bulges the water without breaking the surface, he is nymphing. This means that the fish is eating the natural nymphs just as they are emerging from their shell. This is what a nymph fly imitates.

Streamers and buck tail flies do not imitate any part of the insect’s life cycle. These types of Fly Fishing Flies are much larger and represent small bait  fish such as sculpin minnows. The main difference between theses two types of flies is that streamers are tied with feathers, and bucktails are tied completely with hair. Fly fishing that uses these two types of flies generally requires more rod and line manipulation. The movements are supposed to duplicate the motions of the little fish.

Besides these basic five categories of flies, there are many other kinds of flies that are used for fly fishing. Some of them are a combination of one or more of the basic categories and some do not fit into any group. The most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter how the fly looks to you, the fisherman. It matters how the fly looks to the fish.

Fly Fishing Rods

One important part of fly fishing is the rod. A fishing rod or also called the fishing pole is always associated with the sport called angling. Choosing the right rod for your fly fishing experience is very important. The right combination of reel and rod also matters heavily as well.

There are several types of Fishing Rods to choose from but for fly fishing specifically, the rods are longer, thinner and more flexible. One reason why fly rods are meant to weigh light is because rods made like this are the only ones that can cast even the lightest fly. So, you have to realize that the overall characteristic of a Fly Rod should be lightweight. Also for casting, the line used works together with the weight of the rod, the weight of the line acts as a helper to how the rod is able to cast the fly.

Next, the material of a fly rod varies too. Most of the rods today are made of composite materials such as carbon and graphite, carbon and boron or fiberglass materials; a more innovative version compared to the original bamboo split material. As for the sizes, you have choices between the #0 sizes to the #16 ones. You’ll have to decide first what size of species you want to catch, the type of water condition where you’ll be fishing, the wind and of course the weight of the line before selecting the the type of rod.

The #0 rods are usually used for the smallest species from freshwater, while the #16 rods are for larger ones on saltwater seas. Also, in selecting the type of rod you want to use for fly fishing, familiarize first the parts of it because unlike other types of rod, fly rods don’t have the usual handle extending just right below the reel although there are rods that have very little handle too. The reason for this is to prevent from any casting interference.

These are the primary qualities you may want to take note of before getting yourself the fly rod you want. Don’t forget to make sure, above all else, that you are comfortable with the type of rod you will be using. Don’t get the extremely long rod if you can’t even handle it yourself.

Tips for Tying Fly Fishing Knots

A poorly tied knot may mean losing a prized catch.  Therefore, you want to make sure you tie them properly.  There are a few things you should keep in mind when tying Fly Fishing Knots.  This article will give you a few tips.

Lubrication

After you have tied the knot, you will obviously need to tighten it.  However, before you do so, you should make sure the line is well-lubricated.  When you tighten the knot, the friction creates heat that will weaken monofilament.  Lubricating it beforehand will help decrease the amount of heat generated when tying the knot.  Simply dip it in water or put it in your mouth to lubricate it with your saliva.

Hold

It’s best to tighten fly fishing knots using a slow, continuous pull.  After that’s done, it’s best to test it by pulling on the line and leader quite hard.  You want to make sure that your knot will hold before you even try to land a fish with it.

Trimming

After tying your knot, you will need to trim excess material away.  You can simply use nippers for this.  Although you want to trim away material as closely to the knot as possible, you need to make sure that you don’t get close enough to damage your knot.

Trash

Speaking of trimming, you will probably have excess material lying around afterwards.  This isn’t a problem if you’re tying fly fishing knots at home, as you can just throw them in the trash.  However, if you’re tying them close to the water, you need to put excess material in your pocket or vest.  It will harm fish as well as other animals if you leave it lying around.
