Czech Nymphing – Fly Fishing Flies Selection

Czech Nymph Fly Selection

There is one essential thing that the Fly Fisherman will need when czech nymphing, that is heavy flies! Usually using a team of 3 flies on droppers with the point fly being the heaviest fly.

Cased Caddis – The Prey

Caddis Flies are widespread across Europe wherever water is available, either static or running. However, the adult is a strong flyer and can move some distance from ponds, streams and rivers, especially as it is attracted to light.  However it is the larvae form that is a key part of the diet for fish such as trout. The larvae which make a “case” in which to live using small stones, sand, pieces of leaves and all glued together with a silk lining inside. The silk is spun with a secretion from labial glands (around the mouth) like moth larvae. When full-grown the larva pupates in the case which stops being mobile and may be glued down to a rock.

The cased forms feed on vegetation whilst the caseless forms tend to be either carnivorous or detritivores. The predatory ones are those free living. The web-spinning, caseless larvae may create a silk tube in which to live whilst those in moving water spin the web between stones. This web may trap small invertebrates drifting with the current. This invertebrate drift, as it is known, is an abundant source of food as the current constantly dislodges animals living on the bottom of streams and rivers. Many of these caseless caddis larvae are associated with particular speeds of flow. However, much of what they catch will just be drifting detritus and other organic particulate matter on which the larva will feed (hence detritivore). Some particulate matter will be drifting plankton. Those larvae in especially fast flowing water, e.g. Hydropsyche, will have toughened upper parts to the thoracic segments (thickened external skeleton is refered to as being sclerotised). The larvae have their abdomens safely in the silk tube but the front section of the body protruding into the current. This sclerotisation may be an adaptation to protect them from small stones and other material hitting them.

It is this caddis that is one of our primary fishing imitations when czech nymphing. Below are different imitations that can be used in descending weight order, with the heavyweights of the czech nymphing world described first.

Czech Bottle Fly – Super Heavyweight Flies

Czech bottle nymphs are the “bruisers” of the fly fishing world. Designed to hold botom in the fastest of waters a czech bottle nymph is a uniquely designed Fishing Fly.  The Bottle Fly is a complete fly, designed in the shape of a bottle and is available in 2.2gm, 3.4gm, 4.4gm and even 5.5gm weights. The fly is manufactured from pre-made moulds which are tied very simply, the bottle is rolled in glue and sand is rolled onto the fly, a hackle is then simply tied to the front. The finished fly is identical to a caddis in its nest described above. The beauty of this fly being that it will hold bottom or take a team of flies to the bottom of the fastest of rivers. We use this for sea trout frequently as it can be used to hold a snake fly low in the fastest of waters!

Traditional Czech Nymphs – Heavy Flies

These are the more “traditional” czech nymphs used around the world. These are still a heavy fly, often tungsten weighted to keep the fly low in the water.  Czech nymphs are available in a range of colours, from pea green to cream and red, from hares ear and amber to sparkle and orange. They key with these colours is actually that the czech nymphing technique is forcing the trout to make a rapid decision, fast water with stimulating colours is often deadly.

A technique I frequently use is to use a heavy fly, often a bottle fly on the point with a natural colours czech nymph on one dropper and a nymphs with colours on the second dropper. Using this technique you can see what the trout are eating before focussing on specific colours.

Goldhead / Beadhead Flies

These are the “lightweight flies” used in czech nymphing. The Goldhead or Beadhead fly has a small bead which gives it weight, ideal in slower rivers when czech nymphing and frequently used as an alternative dropper.

Standard Nymphs

Do not forget to truly work a team of droppers, there is nothing to stop the fly fisherman using a standard caddis, nymph, stonefly or other fly on a dropper when czech nymhing, the key is that it needs to be kept low and close to the river bottom.

Tips for Buying Fly Fishing Vests

Fly Fishing Vests are very important pieces of equipment.  They’re responsible for holding all of the tools and accessories you need such as weights, flies, and tippets.  There are a few things you need to consider when buying one.  This article will give you a few tips to ensure you choose the right one.

Material

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make when choosing a vest is the type of material it’s made from.  Two of the most common options are fabric and mesh.  Either material is fine, so this is basically just a personal choice.  However, a mesh vest will be much cooler during the summer.  It can also stretch more than a fabric vest can.

Size

Size is also an important factor when buying fly fishing vests.  It’s best to buy a size larger than you’d wear normally.  Unless you’ll be wearing the vest by itself, you’ll have it on over your other clothes.  So, you need to make sure it’s large enough to fit comfortably.  This is especially important during colder weather as you’ll be wearing more clothes to stay warm.

Speaking of size, you should also consider the length of the vest.  It’s usually best to get one that has a relatively short waist.  This will help keep the items in the vest dry as you’ll probably be wading in the water a lot.

Pockets

It’s also important that you choose a design that provides enough pockets.  As mentioned earlier, the main function of the vest is to hold all of your accessories and tools.  Therefore, make sure you have enough pockets to hold them.  Some of the pockets should have Velcro or a zipper to ensure that you don’t lose important items.

Fly-Fishing, A Fun Sport

Fly-fishing, a fun sport

Fly-fishing is an ancient angling method especially effective in catching trout and salmon. This distinct method of angling uses artificial flies to lure or excite fish. Fly-fishing helps anglers catch the fish easier than the traditional way.

There are two basic forms of fly-fishing, dry flies and wet flies.

Dry flies need coating with floatant in order for it to sit in the surface of the water. Dry flies are mostly effective in upstream and moving water. Dry flies help anglers’ spot where fish resides like pools and pocket in streams. Thus, it is easier to detect them and catch the fish.

The use of wet flies is beneath the surface of the water. Wet flies are nymphs, lures and true wet flies. It works as effective as dry flies except that in cases where weeds are many and almost touching the surface, wet flies blends with the weeds and thus may not be as effective as the dry flies.

Fly-fishing was developed in the 19th century, dry fly technique is very effective especially for slower and clearer rivers.

This is because weeds in rich rivers tend to grow closer to the surface, thus traditional wet Fly Fishing is almost ineffective. Dry fly fishing is thus useful by keeping the fly and the line floating on the surface. This makes fish excited and aggressive; the angler can then spot the location of the fish and in turn catches fish easier.

Later developments of fly-fishing made this concept as basis, thus in the latter part of the 19th century, anglers develop love for fly-fishing. This gave birth to fly-fishing, the sport among its aficionados.

Various parts of the United States host fly-fishing sports such as in the waters of Catskill Mountains of New York and the provinces of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta and California.

Anglers in North America also develop various literatures pertaining to fly-fishing. The sport of fly-fishing and all these literatures gave North America the reputation of being the birthplace of dry fly-fishing, specifically the City of Calgary, Alberta. It is arguably one of the world’s best trout rivers, thus it remains to be the epicenter for the Western Fly Fishing in North America.

Various other states in America keeps the growing number of fly-fishers such as Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Arkansas. The growing number of anglers that are drawn to the sport of fly-fishing keeps the popularity at its peak.

Dry or wet fly-fishing, whichever is more effective in the rivers where you fish will help keep the sport exciting. It may not be long that other countries will learn to love the sport and make it a globally loved sport.

How does fly-fishing work?

Fly fishing uses longer and lighter rods; sizes vary from 2m (6 ft) for fresh water and up to 4m (14 ft) for salt water fly-fishing. Weight for fresh water rods are between two to five ounces.

Popular types of casts in fly-fishing follow its variety in situation specifics. Anglers uses common cast when the angler whisks the Fly Rod forward and back using his forearm and upper arm, the wrist is used to soften the motion.

The rod movement varies from 10 o’clock position to 2 o’clock position without touching the ground. Anglers do this to load the rod tip with energy and to travel the fly line creating distance and control; they call this motion false casting.

False casting needs to be done to excite the fish or make it aggressive enough so that when the fly touches the surface, it will be sure that the area where the fly touches is where most of the fish are located and thus will be easier to spot and catch them.

Whether you are a fly-fishing aficionado for outdoor excitement or having fun with your family, using the proper equipment will help you develop love for the sport. Keep it exciting and enjoy fishing at its finest in most popular fly-fishing locations in the country. There are many locations, thus you will not have a problem in spotting nice locations for you and your family for this wonderful outdoor adventure.

Fly Fishing Flys

fly fishing flys
What are some beginners Fly Tying essentials?

I’m looking for some idea of tools, materials, and what flys I should have in my box. I live in northern Illinois and plan to fish nearby Wisconsin and maybe Nevada.

Well, to tie flies, you’re going to need a basic setup, which typically includes a vise, a thread bobbin or two, fly tying scissors, and perhaps a bodkin (a sharp thing like a very big sewing pin or a very small leather awl). To go along with these, hackle pliers are really handy, as a some hemostats and a small wire nipper.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll probably want to start with some basic flies, like the Woolly Bugger, Hare’s Ear Nymph, and the Elk Hair Caddis. You can look around online for very good step-by-step instructions on tying these and even videos. I guess I hadn’t heard that there was open water in Nevada, but if there is some, those three flies will catch fish everywhere in between there at northern Illinois and Wisconsin. As you learn more techniques, you’ll learn more flies and once you learn enough you can just tie whatever you want. Kinda like cooking — once you know how to make pastry, sauce, meats, and other various things, you can put together whatever kind of meal you want.

You can get all the tools and materials for these things in a kit, but I wouldn’t recommend that route. Everything in such kits are put there for people who only think they want to tie flies but will give it up before the stuff starts breaking or the materials run out. It’s a REAL easy hobby to give up. Anyway, do some research and get yourself as good a vise as you can afford. Tools aren’t that expensive (just don’t let anyone talk you into a $40 pair of scissors — a $5 or $10 pair will do just fine), just get what you need at first and you can add extras as you go.

As for materials, you can get big grab bag sets of material, too, but I’d go the slow and steady way — get the materials you need to learn to tie your first fly. When you move on to the next fly, get the materials for that one. And so on. Soon you’ll have a basic array of materials and when you up and learn a new fly, you’ll need only one new kind of material or maybe not even that.

If you’ve never picked up a bobbin in your life, the very best way to jumpstart this hobby is to take a class or at least watch some live demos where you can ask questions. Or, if you have a friend or relative who can show you something, bribe them to do so. Wash his car, walk his dog. Whatever it takes for him to teach you how to tie a couple flies. If you can’t manage that, get some very detailed and involved videos and watch about eleventy-dozen times. Get a good book on the subject — the Orvis book is not bad (it’s not great) and it’s pretty inexpensive. It explains all the basics and has some good photography.

Bass Fly Fishing – Tips To Get A Beginner Started

Fishing has grown to become much of professions just as it’s an occupation to many people. People catch fish and other varieties of marine products for food as much as means of earning livelihood.

People invest in fishing because it has proven to a worthy venture that pays back. The invest lots of cash on purchase of gears and equipments. The do all this to improve and enhance the fishing, because fishing has become business to them.

To other folks, mostly the adventure lovers and extroverts, fishing is much of a sport as much as it’s a game. They fish for fun and relaxation. They derive fun from fishing because it gives them mental peace and tranquility.

The Bass fly fishing is the kind of fishing that involves the use of man-made fly. It is very different from the customary methods of fishing used by Fly Fishers, where they cast hooks with bits of feather, foam, yarn or fur attached or some similar kind of material to create what is referred to as a fly as compared to using worms or some other kind of bait.

The so called pro bass fishing is similar to the common fly-fishing that we know. Their difference is that pro bass fishing involves a professional in the activity of fishing. Most of these are people well respected in their specific line of fishing activity. They are considered experts because of their devotion and much love in the fishing game inclusive of their contributions.

Of all these types of fly fishing, the widely known and the most standard of them all is the Dry Fly Fishing. This one involves a fisherman using man-made fly, which when cast, it floats on the water. This artificial fly will pass over the fish and entice it to make an effort and grab it. The fisherman will then use his skills to prevent the fish from escaping, until it gets tired and he can retrieve it from the water with the landing net.

Many fishermen prefer this kind of fly fishing, because all the activity is visible – the fisherman casts on the fish he can observe, the fly is visible to him on the water surface and he can easily see as the fish bites the fly. The disadvantage of this fishing method is that trout’s and some other fish type tend to do their feeding in the lower depths of the water and cannot be easily caught using this type dry fishing method.

The other type of fly fishing is the so called the nymph fishing. This one involves the nymphs that hatch from eggs that flies lay in the rivers or lakes, these nymphs come to the water surface to and hatch into flies. Nymph fishing therefore utilizes the imitation of these nymphs that are specially created so that they float in water. This type of fly fishing is often considered tricky.

Flies For Fly Fishing

The Best Saltwater Fishing Flies are a Mouse Click Away

Flies sure have come a long way. Today there are dozens of specialized vices and tools as well as hundreds of supply outlets. And of course you can buy ready made fresh or saltwater fishing flies from anywhere in the world, with the click of a button. But one thing remains the same; the best flies are hand tied by people who tie from experience. And that’s what this article is about. We’re going to take a look at some of the best flies, for any fishing conditions and locals, hand tied by the true masters.

Let’s do this by region. If you are planning a fishing getaway this will give you time to get the best flies you need for where you want to go. And of course, it never hurts to try a new fly at you favorite local spot. You never know…

Starting in the northeast I bring your attention to Joe “Flycatcher” O’Clair. If the name sounds familiar, you might have heard it mentioned by Fly Tying legend and editor of Fly Tier Magazine, David Klausmeyer. David featured Joe as one of the “top 13 US fly tiers” in his fly tying hardcover classic; “Striped Bass Flies: Patterns of the Pros.”

A saltwater fly tying innovator, Joe has designed some great flies for fishing conditions common to many coastal anglers. Located on Cape Cod, he caters to the need for distance casting by beach bound anglers and saltwater flies that are visible, but natural looking, in the cloudy Atlantic waters of New England. Joe’s “Cone Head Deceivers” make the distance and sink rapidly. They do the trick nicely, working especially well on Striped Bass and Bluefish. http://www.FlycatcherFlies.com

If you’re looking for saltwater flies that work like magic from the coast of Nova Scotia down to the outer banks of Carolina, FlycatcherFlies.com should be your first stop.

Now we head down south to St. Petersburg, Florida and fly tying great Danny Sauvageau, of DansCustomFlies.com.

We visit with Dan for one of his latest creations, “Dan’s Weedless Shrimp” http://members.ij.net/danscustomflys/WeedlessShrimpPage.html. This little beauty is virtually snag proof and great for Seatrout, Snook, Bonefish, and just about anything else that will eat shrimp.

Dan has been designing and selling his award winning flies for over a decade. Next time you find yourself in his neck of the woods, a visit to his online store is a must.

Now let’s head over to the Pacific Northwest and http://www.adiposflytying.com. If you’re looking for great Salmon, Steelhead or Trout flies, look no further. The pros at Adipos got their experience fishing the best that British Columbia, Alaska, Washington, and Oregon have to offer.

These are rugged flies for hearty fish that are as at home in the Washington as they are west coastal Canada.

We finish our online pursuit of great saltwater fishing flies in Southern California with a visit to Gary Bulla of http://www.garybulla.com. Gary is one of the foremost experts in designing flies that work especially well for kayakers and surf casters going after Yellowfin Tuna and Roosterfish.

These are just a few of the great saltwater fly tiers out there. Most of them and countless others sell out of local bait and tackle shops as well so look around the next time you take a last minute fishing trip. There’s bound to be a local legend fly tier that has just the right fly for what you’re after.

Keep those lines tight!

Fly Tying: How to Tie Flies : How to Tie the Crackle Back Fly for Fly Fishing

Flies For Fly Fishing

flies for fly fishing

Trout Flies; Fly Fishing for beginners

The key to catching fish is fly selection! With out the right fly you won’t catch fish no matter how hard or long you try that’s just the simple truth but I can help you with a few basic tips.

Even once you select the correct fly its still not a case of cast it out and catch fish, you also need to choose the correct size. Sometimes the fish will just seem to take anything that passes by and other times it’s almost like the fish doesn’t want to even look at your fly.

Even on the worst of days if the fly is the right type then you will catch fish but learning to select the fly is another thing.

There are four main types of flies to choose from.

1. Nymphs and buzzers.

2. Wet flies.

3. Dry flies.

and

4. Lures.

There are several things that need to be taken into account when selecting a fly such as water depth, water clarity, temperature, wind speed, sun light and time of year to name just a few.

- Water depth and clarity should help decide the size, weight and colour of the fly.

- Temperature and sun light should determine the type of fly and the depth of which it should be fished.

- Time of year is the most important factor as at different times of year different types of flies lay eggs, begin to hatch and grow into adult flies.

Natural fly imitations are all effective at different times of year but there are different species that hatch around the same time each year and excellent fishing can be had it you can match your imitation fly to the natural one just hatching. At different times of years there are different types of natural flies on which fish feed and if you match your imitation to the natural insect then you can have one of your best ever days fishing.

Lures are flies that don’t even look like any insect but are big and flashy to catch the fish’s attention and induce a take. Lures are best on really bright hot days where the fish will be holding deep in the water close to the bottom or at the start of winter and through out the winter months.

Dry Fly Fishing is considered the crème de la crème of fishing. Every angler knows that dry fly fishing if the “holy grail” of the sport of fishing. Not every one has the money to get lessons or go on a fly fishing course and even if they do every person can only take in so much information at the one time so that’s why I recommend an eBook or one you can buy in your local book shop as you can keep going back to it over and over again. An eBook is normally cheaper and always just as good if not better at times then a hard or paper back book. Also you can refer back to the eBook as often as you want unlike hiring an instructor for only an hour or two.

When any one asks what’s my secret to catching so many fish even on “bad days”? Or if I had to choose what is the most useful piece of my fishing kit what would it be? My answer always is “I owe my success to the eBook that thought me everything I know and if I had to start all over again in the morning the very first piece of fly fishing kit I would buy is a detailed eBook.”

Fly Fishing: Types of Flies

Types of flies are also known as patterns. What exactly is being fished for and under what conditions determines the type of fly that is used. There are many different patterns that are used in fly fishing. They can be broken down into five main categories: wet, dry, streamer, nymph, and terrestrial.

Wet Fly

As the name inplies, wet flies resemble insects that are under the water. This includes dead insects that are coming up and emerging from the water. This type of fly can also be made to look like bigger water creatures such as leeches or crawfish.

Dry Fly

Just as with the wet fly, the name also gives away what it is imitating. Therefore, a dry fly is meant to look like an insect that stays on top of the water. While fishing with a dry fly it is usually necessary to dry the fly several times.

Streamer

This is a type of wet fly but it is meant to look like an injured bait fish. Streamers are larger than the other types of flies. They are used to catch larger fish that are predatory.

Nymph

A nymph is another type of wet fly. It is supposed to look like an insect that is coming out of its cocoon or its larval state. A majority of fish like to eat insects in this state.

Terrestrial

Terrestrial flies can be used as wet or dry flies. They are made to look like larger insects that mistakenly jump into the water and drown. These can be either made to look like an insect desperate to free itself from the water or as an insect that has already died and is simply sinking into the water without movement.

In fly fishing there are many different types of flies. While each type of fly has its own type of fish it is supposed to catch, many anglers will use any type of fly that they think will work on the fish at a certain time. The wet flies, dry flies, streamers, numphs, and terrestrials are the most used and most popular types of flies and will help bring a fisherman a lot of success.

Decisions can be critical when you are deciding on your fly strategy. Is there a color to prefer for the morning as opposed to the evening? Will those trout really even notice the difference between your flies or will any do when twilight hits? Should you tie your own or have professionally produced flies? Have fun and experiment and eventually you will find what suits your style of fishing and the type of fish you are trying to catch.

Saltwater Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is fast catching up as an adventure sport and hobby of sorts. Fly fishing is quite different from still fishing as fly fishing needs more technique and provides better game too. In fly fishing, Saltwater Fly Fishing and freshwater fly fishing at the two demarcated zones. Obviously freshwater fly fishing is when you are fly fishing in lakes and rivers whereas saltwater fly fishing is done in the open seas.

Salt Water Fly Fishing is actually quite different from freshwater fly fishing. Besides the place where fly fishing happens, saltwater fly fishing uses larger sized tackle and hence requires more strength and the experience to handle it. This is because of several factors which include the size of the fish in the sea which are considerably bigger. Secondly, you will have to cast longer lines in the open seas and the tides and wind always play spoil sport in the sea.

Fly Fishing Guides will repeatedly tell one to spend a lot on the equipment and specifically on the fishing rod and to spend less on the reel. The fishing rod obviously is the most important aspect and a good rod is essential. One does not necessarily have to go for a high tech high priced rod, but spending on a good rod would be a good idea. As for the reel, the amount you want to spend on it can depend on what you allocate for the rod and reel budget. But do take care to buy a reasonably good quality reel that is saltwater useable. There is no point buying a reel that gets rusted or corroded in saltwater easily. Even with a saltwater reel, one must take good care of the reel and wash it after use every time so it’s not exactly a maintenance free device either.

Fly fishing guides have a lot of recommendations for a person who plans to start of salt water fly fishing. Salt water fly fishing clearly is a little harder and dangerous than fly fishing in freshwaters and hence additional preparation is necessary. For starters, when salt water fly fishing, it is always good to have a spare rod in hand. The weather conditions and the fish themselves will play major roles in stressing the rod and hence an extra is always essential. Secondly always have secondary reel loaded with a line and also hold a wet tip which will allow for quick changeovers. A stripping guard is mandatory on your stripping finger. This is even truer in saltwater where a rope burn could occur in your fingers when you are not prepared to release the line in quick reaction. Injuring your finger and exposing it to salty conditions are not desirable at all during salt water fly fishing. Safety is essential like any Fly Fishing Guide says and hence if you plan on salt water fishing off shore, always wear Fly Fishing Vests that are reflective, waterproof and visible at all times. Similarly when going into the sea, it is always essential that you check weather conditions, tides and have all those details and maps on you to assist you on your fly fishing trip.
