when tying a blue winged olive dry fly?

ok so i just went to a shop and bought a few then went Fishing with my cousin and we killed the fish with them so i would like to tie some so that i dont have to buy any but anyways as in the pic i will include the fly has these little wings on the top of it…do you really need to add those in??

ive heard that the main reason why fishing stuff looks so niec is just to apeal to the buyer not the fish

in those 2 flys do you really need the wings?

You are correct, sir. No, you don’t necessarily need the wings, and yes, most flies are tied with the intention of attracting fish AND anglers both. In any case, it’s the hackle stippling the water surface that the fish sees. Also, if you think of a fish coming at this fly (or the fly coming at the fish), it’s the body that the fish sees (from below) not that pleasing mayfly profile (from the side) that you get from a pro-tied BWO and its pretty wings. This is not to say that the wings have no purpose at all — the more realistic a fly is, the more likely a fish is to take it. If you could tie a fly that looked precisely like a natural it’d outfish the rather crude feather imitations that we use. However, unless you’re fishing very clear, still water, you can get away with a rougher imitation.

Of course, your mileage may vary — why don’t you try some home-tied flies with hackle only and some pro-tied flies with the wings. See if one outfishes the other. I predict they’ll do about the same.

Having said that, I would learn to tie the wing, at some point, if I were you. It does make an attractive fly, is a basic technique, and it’s used in lots of other patterns. Once you get it down, it’s not that hard. If I can do it anyone can.
