3 Great Fly Fishing Tips

Many live bait anglers are excellent as sportsmen, but for the Fly Fisherman he is doing better for nature by conserving it at the outset.

Fly fishing is one of the sports that is growing in popularity, as well as being part of the growing concern for conserving natural resources, and helps to provide aquatic recreation.

There are just three basic simple rules to follow if what you want to be successful at fly fishing – you should have a good suitable rod, a line to match, and learn to use the correct technique for casting.

Those who want to learn some good tips for fly fishing, you should look at the following list that should give any angler pointers on harnessing their skills at fly fishing:

1 The Rod Material

For beginners or for moderate use, a rod made of hollow glass is the best advice as it requires less care than one made of bamboo, and will wear better if not stored properly or is mishandled.

2 Line

For perfect fly casting your line needs to match the rod exactly, as any problems usually indicates that it it too light to get the right action out of the rod.

If you look at your rod, it will gave a rating on the right weight line that is needed which is the same if you are catching bluegills and small trout, right up the largest sea fish.

The size line that is needed should be a C level, a GBF three-diameter or an HCH double taper; given that most Fly Fishing Rods are made of hollow glass. These lines work best for most rods, regardless of the length or the weight of the rods for anglers.

3 The Right Casting Technique

When casting, 20 feet of line should be put out in front first. A straight line should be cast out by the angler. So as to get this right jerky movements should be avoided if possible even when it is done at greater speed.

The angler should remain relaxed so as to get the casting right.

Once the fundamental basics have been learned, you can join the hundreds of others who already enjoy fly fishing.

To cast successfully takes practice so spend some time by a stream, and watch other fishermen who are already competent at casting and you’ll soon get the hang of it. It is fun trying.

You will learn best by getting some good tips near a stream, so soon you will acquire the skills and learn all you need to know about fly fishing.

Choosing a Fly Fishing Rod

When you choose a Fly Fishing Rod, you will have to use an industry standard system that specifies weight. Fly Fishing Rods are not weighed in grams. Instead, a 1 to 14 number system is used. It’s quite easy to determine the optimum weight of your rod by basing it on the size and species of fish that you plan to catch.

A basic guide that will assist you in choosing the proper Fly Rod is: Lower weight, small fish; higher weight, larger fish. Secondary factors include personal preference and weather conditions. Light fly rods do not cast well if the wind is strong.

Species and Weight Guide

• Weight 1to 3 – pan fish, small trout and other small fish species.

• Weight 4 – small fish species of all kinds.

• Weight 5 to 6 – small bass and medium-sized trout.

• Weight 7 to 8 – large bass, large trout, steelhead and salmon.

• Weight 9 to 14 – muskie, tarpon, large salmon and large saltwater fish species.

Always choose a line and reel that have the identical rod weight that you have chosen.

Beginners should use a 3 to 5 weight rod when fishing streams. If you are fishing for bass, a 5 to 6 weight rod is best. Saltwater species and freshwater salmon require a rod that is 7 to 8 weight.

Length

Common lengths for fly fishing rods are 7, 8 and 9 feet. Use short rods for short casts in areas that are surrounded by brush, trees or shrubs. If fishing in an open area where longer casts are possible, choose a longer fly fishing rod. If you plan to fish in lakes or rivers, choose a rod of 4 to 6 weight that is 8 to 9 feet long and use a medium action rod for the best results.

Learning the Different Types of Fly Fishing Lures

Learning the skill of fly fishing is no easy sport for every angler. It involves angle precision in order to achieve the target position of the artificial flies. Fly fishing is almost a game for many because interested anglers are challenged to catch many different fish species with use of the Fly Rod by imitating insects to lure the fishes. The success of fly fishing depends on many factors and one factor is the fly fishing lure. Imitating insects are done by attaching lures or flies into the fly line to be thrown to the water. This imitation of flies can lure the fishes and eventually trap them and catch them.

There are different types of fly fishing lures or flies and each are listed below

Wet fly This type of lure imitates aquatic insects below the water surface. Meaning this type of lure design are the patterned after drowned insects.

Streamer Lures

This is a type of lure that is a form of wet fly lure. This type is designed to imitate small fishes that are being eaten by large fishes.

Dry Fly

This type of lure is designed to imitate adult stage of many aquatic insects. The lure should be able to ride on the water surface smoothly to make it almost real and close to insects that falls into the water such as beetles and ants.

Nymphs Lures

This Lures imitates the larval form of aquatic insects. This is a special form of the wet fly lure.

Surface Lures

This are also called bass poppers. This type of lured design imitates frogs or mice. They are made from bright colors that are attractive to large fishes such as Northern Pike or Bass especially when they cause commotion due to water movement.

Lures or Flies may be bought in the market or can be self-made. Making flies or lures is a skill and many anglers are learning to make their own lure instead of buying in the market. They are up for the challenge of making the difficult yet best flies to lure the fish close and eventually fall trap to it. Lures may be made from feather, fur or light cloth and tied together with a tie specially made for making Fly Fishing Flies. There are many books or videos providing step by step procedure in making the lures. One just has to follow them properly in order to make the best lure to catch fishes.

Take some time to make sure that you have the right Fly Fishing For Beginners guide. Starting off with good information to help you get the fish you need is essential!

The first thing that you need to think about when you are thinking about picking up a fly fishing instructional book is what the expertise it assumes that you have. Far too many people think that they can stumble on the right cast technique simply by imitating others, but unless you have good information on how to achieve this, you are going to find that there are many things that simply will not gel for you.

Also remember that a good fly fishing for beginners guide is going to teach you more about your quarry.

The fish that you are looking for are not going to jump on your hook, but sometimes you will be surprised by what a difference even a small change in technique or location can make for you.

Take a moment to really think about what you are doing and what your success rates are. If you have wondered why the fish are not biting for you, now is the time to change it. Take some time and make sure that you are thinking about what separates you from the star Fly Fishers out there.

Fly Fishing for Trout – Casting or Hunting

Fly casting is a skill that most fly fishermen would probably consider the most integral skill of Fly Fishing For Trout. Certainly it is the most recognizable trait of fly fishing.

BUT, if catching fish is as important to you as a great looking cast is, then you may actually need to be careful just how much casting you do.

Fly fishing has far more in common with hunting than it does with other forms of fishing. This is because trout are such a timid creature and are so easily spooked. Although it is not such an issue if you are fishing deep in large bodies of water or in wide, fast flowing streams, it is still for this reason that casting can also be your worst enemy when trout fishing.

The classical ‘Long cast’, although a beautiful thing to behold, and even more beautiful to perform, does have it’s limitations. It was designed to deliver a lure to a timid quarry, who would be spooked by splashing sinkers or floats or any of the traditional fishing equipment and tackle generally used for other, less discerning species. The whole concept of doing this with a whip-like rod and line was indeed an ingenious one.

Trout, and particularly Brown Trout, see everything. And the bigger the trout, the more they see. The Fly Fisherman standing plain view false casting is an obvious predatory threat and will cause a fish to disappear into the depths, without you even knowing the trout was ever there.

To catch good, wild trout in smallish or still waters you must become an ambush predator and learn to think like a hunter. This, the element of surprise, is one of your greatest skills when fly fishing for trout. Believe it or not, even above good casting skills.

Dressing to be reasonably well camouflaged, keeping low and not making any fast or large movements, all play a role in not alerting a potential target trout to your presence. Even making sure you don’t step heavily on the ground as you approach the fishing spot, keeps your footsteps from resonating through the water. Sound travels very well under water, particularly for a creature who has receptacles designed to hear within an aquatic environment.

Without a doubt, you will have to cast, and the better practised you are at casting with a Fly Rod, the less movement you must make to get your fly into the position you want it. So there is a good argument for spending time casting, just for casting sake. This is best done in an open place, preferably over water if you have the luxury, like a dam or lake, but anywhere that you are not going to catch any unwanted items will do to improve your skills.

If you want to be successful, don’t just trudge up to the waters edge and start casting out into the middle of the lake or stream. The bulk of the aquatic life that the trout source as their food items are usually located towards the edges of the water, and near to the aquatic plant life also.

With this in mind, the trout will more likely be keeping as far out of reach of their own predators as possible, while maintaining a presence (cruising in still waters, on station in faster waters) close to their preferred food source. Larger fish preferring deeper water for security, and structures or irregularities for potential dietary supplies.

Stream Fly Fishing- Trout Holding Lies

As you Fly Fish for trout it becomes very important to know the different varieties of trout lies. The Trout take up its positions, or lies, depending upon a set of 3 of their fundamental needs when they move in water. The needs are a shelter from constant current with protection from predators plus the requirement of adequate food.

Often swimming against any strong current could be extremely tiring for any trout. Hence, they look for protection from current which becomes is their foremost need. At times, the trout rests behind objects within the water, such as a large rock, that breaks the current. However, at times, the trout stay within holding lies which are close to current. They prefer to be able to grab any food coming their way and dash out towards it.

The second need which the trout has is protection from the predators. They often prefer water which has enough depth, or is rough enough so that they are not seen at the bottom by other predatory birds like the osprey or kingfishers. The trout commonly hold where some type of cover exists to protect them. The cover they look for is like a log or a deep pool. It could be an undercut bank to keep very safe. Sometimes while fly fishing, one might see small and medium sized trout often feeding in shallows quite far from any kind of shelter. It is however quite unusual to see bigger trout feeding in shallows, unless it finds some kind of cover nearby.

Third need, which mostly overrides the previous two, is the basic need for enough food. The trout seems to live by fundamental formula; any food it consumes should give it more energy than they expend having it. Any trout would fight against a heavy and strong current if migrating, hatching, or drifting insects come in the way. For the trout any amount of food which the insects provide justifies that extra energy required to fight any current. Usually, in case of a heavy hatch, trout might hold towards the surface of pool, or a flat, putting them in danger from different predators as they greedily feed.

In fly fishing, to know the three basic requirements of trout which would make them to hold within some types of water, when avoiding others, becomes a significant piece of information. Knowing the main spots of water which meet any of the trout’s most basic requirements, would know precisely where the fish is holding.

Holding Lies

Trout have three kinds of holding lies. Holes which are deep and those looking like dark areas within the streambed are commonly used to do away with the current. Best deep holes often have logs or boulders for cover. Then, eddies below points, like the edge of boulders, create slack water pool. Sometimes a reverse current pool is created, holding many trout. At times, upwelling springs come up as lighter spots of the bubbling sand where usually the silt has washed itself away. Quite many trout are brought closer to such springs in summers and winters due to a stable temperature.

A successful fly fishing would depend upon knowing everything possible about habitats and habits of the fishes you are planning to hook.

The Most Amazing Place in America

The Coconino National Forest is a 1.856-million acre (7,511 km²) United States National Forest located in northern Arizona in the vicinity of Flagstaff. Originally established in 1898 as the “San Francisco Mountains National Forest Reserve”, the area was designated a U.S. National Forest in 1908 when the San Francisco Mountains National Forest Reserve was merged with lands from other surrounding forest reserves to create the Coconino National Forest.

Today, the Coconino National Forest contains diverse landscapes, including deserts, ponderosa pine forests, flatlands, mesas, alpine tundra, and ancient volcanic peaks. The forest surrounds the towns of Sedona and Flagstaff and borders four other national forests; the Kaibab National Forest to the west and northwest, thePrescott National Forest to the southwest, the Tonto National Forest to the south, and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to the southeast.

The forest contains all or parts of ten designated wilderness areas, including the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, which includes the summit of the San Francisco Peaks. The headquarters are in Flagstaff. There are local ranger district offices in Flagstaff, Happy Jack, and Sedona.

The Sequoia is one of nineteen National Forests in California. It takes its name from the giant sequoia, the world’s largest tree, which grows in more than 30 groves on the forest’s lower slopes. The Sequoia’s landscape is as spectacular as its trees. Soaring granite monoliths, glacier-torn canyons, roaring whitewater, and more await your discovery at the Sierra Nevada’s southern end. Elevations range from 1,000 feet in the foothill region to peaks over 12,000 feet in the rugged high country, providing visitors with some of the most spectacular views of mountainous landscape in the entire west.
RECREATION The Sequoia National Forest offers a huge range of outdoor recreation activities. The trails offer hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The many developed campgrounds or dispersed areas provide the full range of camping experiences. The rivers, lakes and reservoirs offer boating, Fishing, water-skiing, swimming, whitewater rafting, and kayaking. In the winter, the high elevations provide downhill skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ATTRACTIONS Hikers, off-highway vehicle users, and horseback riders have over 1,500 miles of maintained roads, 1000 miles of abandoned roads, and 850 miles of trails in the forest available for their use and enjoyment. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which stretches 2,600 miles from Canada to Mexico, crosses the Sequoia National Forest for approximately 78 miles. The three National Recreation Trails in the forest are: Summit, Cannell Meadow, and Jackass Creek. Other points of interest on the forest include: Hume Lake, Chicago Stump, Cannell Meadow Station, Kern River, Kings River, Dome Rock and Needles. The Sequoia contains portions of six designated wilderness areas: Kiavah, Monarch, South Sierra, Dome Land, Jennie Lakes and Golden Trout. Specific winter activity areas accessible by highway are: Hume Lake Ranger District at Cherry Gap and Quail Flat; Tule River Ranger District in the vicinity of Quaking Aspen Campground; and Greenhorn Ranger District at Greenhorn Summit HISTORY The Sequoia National Forest received its name for the 39 groves of giant sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum, located within its boundaries. In 1847 a German botanist named Stephen Endlicher named the coastal redwood trees Sequoia sempervirens. He presumably was honoring the Cherokee Chief Sequoya or Sikwayi who invented a phonetic alphabet of 86 symbols for the Cherokee language. In 1854 a French botanist, Joseph Decaisne, applied the name to the giant sequoias, which are closely related to the coastal redwoods.

Tips for Improving Your Fly Fishing Techniques

While fly fishing is considered to be one of the most relaxing hobbies you’ll ever engage in, there is still a certain amount of skill necessary in order to be successful.  You might have heard so much about the cast and about tying your own flies and may wonder how to really improve your Fly Fishing Techniques in order to improve your catch overall.  There are just a few simple things you can remember in order to make your time on the water a more enjoyable experience and to just plain old catch more fish; let’s review these few simple things to remember about your fly fishing techniques. Being gentle with your cast is important and probably the most important of all fly fishing techniques.  Many anglers make the mistake of trying to force their cast the way you do with typical fishing.  Remember that you’re not trying to reach too far ahead of you and certainly don’t want to sink your bait the way you do with typical fishing.  Your goal is to just skim or flit your fly over the top of the water.  You also want to remember that with fly fishing, the fly is virtually weightless and the line is heavy, so the line pulls the fly and not the other way around.  If you give your line just the slightest bit of direction you’ll see how it pulls the fly behind it and how the fly then skims the water.  Practice your cast as part of your fly fishing techniques as much as you can.  You can stand in the yard and just use a line without a fly.  Aim for about ten or fifteen feet in front of you and keep practicing until you can hit it perfectly.

Other ways to improve your fly fishing techniques is to get comfortable with working the line.  With typical fishing you usually have no slack in your line but with fly fishing, that slack is necessary for when you pull the line up for another cast.  Getting used to how it feels to control the slack with your secondary hand may take some practice.  As you practice your cast, practice handling that slack so that it doesn’t get tangled up in the line and so that you have enough slack overall.  Both hands are going to be important when it comes to your fly fishing techniques so get used to how the line feels to you and what it takes to control it.

While you’re practicing your fly fishing techniques, remember not to get too caught up in instructions and the “proper” way to cast.  If you do, you might find that you’re missing out on the enjoyment of fly fishing overall.  Anglers have been successful with fly fishing for hundreds of years without fancy schools or instructions, so you don’t need to worry too much about these things.  Do the best you can with your own fly fishing techniques and remember to enjoy!

History Of Fly Fishing – An Ancient Technique!

The roman traveler and historian Claudius Aelianus had recorded Macedonian fishermen using the technique of fly fishing during the 2nd century. However, historians believe that this technique was around much before that and it was just named by the Roman. The technique of using flies as lures to catch certain types of fish is what gives this technique its name.

Fly fishing is a technique of fishing that needs a six foot fishing pole and a six foot long fishing line with a fly at the end of the line on a hook. It is basically the fly at the end of the line that gives this technique its name. The Macedonian fishermen were, according to the Roman, very successful at this type of fishing.

The Fly
Fishermen usually make an artificial fly out of a hook some clay and the wings of a flying insect. In modern times this men have learned to make much more sophisticated flies for their sport. The flies today can be from the most simple to the mechanical lures. Some fishermen have made flies out of the synthetic materials such as colored wool and plastic. The wings of the fly, made from colored wool or plastic lures the fish while the way it is constructed allows the fly to spin in the water while the angler pulls in the reel.

The fish mistake the spinning fly for a live insect and bite. Then there are the other mechanical flies that are more sophisticated. These can be wound up to fly around in the water in a random manner and make a buzzing noise. This is very successful in luring any fish in the area for a meal.

The Fishing Rod And Line
Fly Fishing Rods have come a long way since the discovery of the technique. In the beginning he rods were cut from around the waterfront, then the rods were made more sophisticated with the rod manufacturers slicing the bamboo into four long pieces and then gluing them together over a solid base. This gave the rod a little more spring. Since World War 2 the fly fishing rods are being constructed out of fiber glass. These rods are much more affordable easily available. It is also possible to collapse these fiber glass rods into smaller pieces so that they can be packed away for traveling. The older rods are, however, still available on demand.

The line has also undergone a change over the years. At first the fly fishing line was made out of horse’s hair, and then with the invention of silk the fishing line was made from silk though the line still needed to be opened and dried from time to time. Then nylon took the place of silk and is still used today.

Though this was a profession in the 2nd century it has become an elite sport over the years. This sport of fly fishing is very popular in Europe and America. People invest very highly in Fly Fishing Equipment including boats and paying highly for Fly Fishing Trips to distant parts of the world.

California Fishing Reports: The Inside Catch

So what do you need to know about California fishing reports? There are certainly a few things that you will want to consider when checking out a Fishing Report about California. This article will touch on these points.

For one thing, you will want to know about the separate fishing sections of California and what they mean when it comes to a good report about California. For instance, you will want to know what to expect from a fishing report in Northern California freshwater, compared to what you would expect from a report about freshwater fishing in Southern California. After viewing a few California fishing reports this should start to come naturally. Here are some things to expect from a good fishing report.

– Fishing Reports: The Necessities of a Good Report:

Some reports will provide a little information on the weather, maybe some information on the types of fish that are biting in a certain area, and then the most popular fishing spots in a general area. Some other features include GPS mapping and stocking information for certain freshwater areas. The bottom line is that a good fishing report will have all of those items and more.

A good fishing report will likely include the weather, first and foremost. This should include some information on the types of boats that will be good choices for the conditions as well as the wind knots. It will also discuss the temperature highs and lows as well as the average temperature at night.

Water will be included in a good fishing report, and this would include swells as well as the cool water temperature and high water temperature for a given fishing spot.

Bait will also be mentioned. This will include the price of bait in the area as well as which types of bait will be good for which types of fish. It should also include a report on the types of bait that are working right. This is an important and crucial piece of information that should be included in any good fishing report. Make sure to check the currency of the report as an outdated fishing report is essentially worthless.

Next, there should be discussion on the fish that are biting in the area and a specific section on each fish and what type of bait they are taking right now for the specific spot.

Along with all of this, there should be a section on the different bodies of water in the area, specifically for freshwater fishing, as it will be good to know about the different lakes, rivers and tributaries that are located around a specific fishing spot of interest.

– California Fishing Reports: What to Expect:

A California fishing report should have all of the same things that any good fishing report would contain. This includes all of the points mentioned above. The most important thing to remember about fishing in California, is that there is a lot of diversity among the fishing spots, and so a lot of diversity in the gear that will be needed to catch the fish. In this way, you will want a California fishing report to get into the smaller details about exactly what types of rods, bait and tackle are needed as well as optimal fishing line weights for each spot of interest.

The thing to remember about California fishing reports is that a good one will not be short on any of these valuable pieces of information. The good news is that there is no shortage of good California fishing reports so check out some reports and get fishing! Good luck.

Fly Fishing

5 Types of Fly Fishing Flies

Although most flies represent water insects, a terrestrial fly is made to imitate a land insect that has fallen into the water. The two most common terrestrials that are imitated for fly fishing are the ant and the grasshopper.

Although there are hundreds of  types of flies used for fly fishing, most of them fall into five specific categories, or types.  These types are dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, streamers and buck tails, and terrestrials. The main purpose of the fly is to imitate an insect that the fish wants to eat.

A dry fly imitates a natural insect that is floating on the top of the water. Fish are very sensitive to any motion of their water and how currents move the insects they want for food. In fly fishing, if a dry fly is moving even slightly against the current, the fish will have nothing to do with it. The fly  may look like something the fish recognizes but it is not acting the same an insect would. The fish recognizes it as something foreign in the water and leaves it alone.

In fly fishing, a wet fly is imitating a drowned, or drowning,  natural insect and is fished below the water surface.  No one is sure if the wet fly is seen as a drowning adult insect or a nymph from the perspective of the fish. Most fly fishermen today seem to believe that it is seen as a nymph. Because of this less and less wet flies are being sold. Wet fly fishing is the oldest form of fly fishing. It dates  back to descriptions of the early Macedonian people.

A nymph is the stage between an egg and the adult in the life cycle of an insect. In fly fishing, flies that resemble nymphs are growing popularity. The nymph fly is just below the surface of the water. When a fish bulges the water without breaking the surface, he is nymphing. This means that the fish is eating the natural nymphs just as they are emerging from their shell. This is what a nymph fly imitates.

Streamers and buck tail flies do not imitate any part of the insect’s life cycle. These types of Fly Fishing Flies are much larger and represent small bait  fish such as sculpin minnows. The main difference between theses two types of flies is that streamers are tied with feathers, and bucktails are tied completely with hair. Fly fishing that uses these two types of flies generally requires more rod and line manipulation. The movements are supposed to duplicate the motions of the little fish.

Besides these basic five categories of flies, there are many other kinds of flies that are used for fly fishing. Some of them are a combination of one or more of the basic categories and some do not fit into any group. The most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter how the fly looks to you, the fisherman. It matters how the fly looks to the fish.

Go Chase The Pike With A Fly..

I moved slowly upstream peering intently into the gin clear water, the bright sunshine allowed me to see every pebble, stick and even the minnows in the bottom of the pool. No breeze ruffled the surface. A shoal of bait fish hung close to a weed bed. Nothing moved as I peered intently into the water. The combination of my long peaked cap, and polarised glasses helped me search deep into the flowing water.

I blinked, and then squinted. Did I see a pike? Yes, there it is, I spotted a fin movement, then a tail moved, enough for me to realise I was looking at a pike. The perfect predator. My eyes move slowly up the length of a fish, it must be thirty inches or more in length. My heart beat a little faster as my brain went into overdrive as I computed the angle of the cast, then distance to target. I launched some line, then realised I needed a bit more. I pulled a few more feet from the reel. All the time I was keeping my eyes on the fish. I was the hunter; the hunted is a fish that goes back a few million years. It probably weighs 14lbs It’s there for catching, if I don’t make a mistake.

The fish is moving slowly upstream, I have just one chance. I shot the line, the fly landed with a slight plop, hardly breaking the water surface. The fish moves its head slightly then slowly turns. This is the moment I have been waiting for all morning. I twitched the line imparting life into the fly – a fly that was created in Northern Canada. It’s tied up on a 3/0 Partridge hook using Polar bear hair and a few strands of crystal flash. It’s some six inches long and comes alive in the water when moved.

I made a six inch strip; the pike was off the starting block moving fast towards my fly, creating a bow wave. I gave another quick strip of some three inches. The big one couldn’t resist it, there was a big swirl, a boil. Then the fly had disappeared as the fish turned for the deep water. The strip strike set the hook, his speed and momentum carried the fish skywards, head shaking, gills flared. For a second, perhaps two, I stand spellbound, watching this fighting fury crash back into the water. It’s like an explosion as the water erupts, the ever increasing circles going across the river. After some minutes the fish is bought to hand. I bend down then take the barbless hook from the scissors of the pike’s mouth then watch it swim off slowly. Below is what I made to catch the pike, go ahead and try it for yourself

If you were to take a look in the fly boxes of a few anglers who target the pike, you will discover hundreds of different fly patterns. Just as today’s anglers Fishing for rainbow trout, carry several boxes of fly patterns, but only use a dozen flies. It’s the same with us anglers who target the pike. I have several boxes of flies for pike, but for most of my fishing I probably only use a dozen patterns – but with various colour combinations that dozen probably grows to a hundred or more. Most of my pike flies are tied up on Partridge CS43 2/0 to 4/0 or Cox and Rawle Uptide 1/0 TO 5/0 A few flies have been tied up on Ade Sweider designed hooks.

One of my most successful pike fly patterns is without doubt the Polar fly. It’s tied as follows.

Tail-white Polar bear hair, not synthetic hair, and pearl crystal.

Body- pearl fritz or silver tinsel strip. The wings of white Polar bear hair, again not synthetic hair with pearl crystal hair.

Remarks- Two types of bodies should be tied up, as one will often work when the other doesn’t. I don’t know why this is so but that’s the nature of the beast. This pattern is also excellent for many saltwater species including the bass

Other patterns are the Polar perch with a tail of Polar hair, a body of gold tinsel with 12lb mono rib. The wings are yellow buck with green buck over tying with black silk. You can add purple crystal hair strands to wing, create barring effect on wing with black permanent pen. A fly pattern I really like is the Red tailed rat. There are many occasions when pike ignore a submerged fly, but will savagely hit a surface fished one. The Red tailed rat is quite simple to tie, with a tail of red buck and red crystal hair. The body is black deer hair, wedge shaped, tying silk is black. At one time I had eyes fixed on these mouse and rat type patterns, but I now feel they are a waste of time and money. All the pike will see is an outline of the red tailed rat as it is worked across the surface. Takes are usually very savage.

The tail of this fly comprises two orange marabou left on the quill, with a body of orange marabou with some silver oval, tinsel rib or orange cock hackle, palmered down the body. Wings are four orange cock hackle. Purple crystal hair may be added to the tail and wing. This is a good pattern for coloured water.

Thread-white and chartreuse, Tail-white buck tail, shank length, inside white neck hackles (2 each side), extending one and a half times shank length, Body-silver tinsel with a collar of white buck tail, extending nearly to tip of tail. Topping-is chartreuse buck tail, as long as collar. Throat-several strands of red Krystal Flash. The head-is Chartreuse thread, lacquered. Eyes Applied with Faber-Crystall uni-point marker.

I also have two frog patterns which have proved excellent fish catchers. We all know how pike love weeds, my frog patterns can be fished in the thickest of weeds, without getting caught up. When fishing reed beds I have had pike come a foot out of the water to grab a frog pattern as I pulled the frog up the reed stems..

Rods Reels and Lines

The Tackle Shop stocks a great selection of Fly  Fishing combo’s and rods. In your tackle shop you will find several brands of line which will be suitable for chucking big flies for pike. One line will not cover all aspects of pike Fly Fishing. To get the best out of the sport, you need at least three lines. Cortland lines are my first choice, the nine weight Ghost tip is probably my most used line. I can fish flies from the surface, down to four or five feet, depending on the speed of retrieve. This line comes with a fifteen foot clear tip, which is then built into a floating line, it will also lift cleanly off the water. Two other Cortland lines I use are both sinkers, a medium and fast sink. It’s surprising how often you will use a fast sink line when fishing the big reservoirs and gravel pits. When fishing with a fast sink line I will often use a leader of three feet, perhaps eighteen inches.

To buy some of the products I have been talking about try The Tackle Shop or for Fly Fishing Books or DVD’s go The Fishing Shop
