8 Reasons Why you as a New Fly Fisherman Should Join a Club

I still remember watching my dad up to his waist in a rushing Colorado stream casting flies for trout. I was too young for that kind of Fishing (although at the age of six I had caught a trout off the bridge in front of our home, using a spinning reel and a worm).

It fascinated me to watch the glistening line whipping repeatedly back and forth over his head as he sought to get enough distance to put the fly where he wanted it.

The memory of the heavy strikes and the subsequent fights with lunker trout (that we ate that night) drove me to Fly Fishing later in life, but I took it up with certain amount of trepidation.

I have to admit I was somewhat intimidated. Fly fishing took a lot of skill, I thought. More that I felt I had.

JUST A LITTLE MORE SKILL?

Arguably, fly fishing takes just a little more skill, or “know-how”, as my dad might put it, than other forms of fishing.

Matching up your equipment is just the beginning, learning to cast takes practice, not just to get familiar with how the reel works as it spools off line, but to gain the dexterity to place the fly where it needs to go — to drop it right in front of a lunker you suspect is lying in a pool behind that big rock.

Then comes Fly Tying — not really necessary — but a skill that puts you miles ahead of the fisherman that buys flies off the shelf, who can’t “match the flies to hatch”, or create them “on the spot”.

More skill than you or I possess, you may ask? No, not necessarily. Not if you find and associate with the right people, those who already possess the skills, and are more than willing to impart them to you.

A SOLITARY SPORT?

At first glance, fly fishing seems a solitary sport. While you might see more than one fly fisherman wading in a stream or a lake, they appear to be pretty isolated from one another, not exactly like a bunch of golf buddies pulling a cart and shooting above par.

The fact is that that individual fly fisherman probably has a lot of “back-up” contacts and friends; you just can’t see them because they’re all part of the club he belongs to.

He as acquired many of his skills by associating with other people.

WHY JOIN A CLUB?

In our busy schedules, clubs take time away from other things we probably should be doing. In many cases, clubs are time wasters, put together by people who have an obsession with following “Robert’s Rules of Order”.

Fly fishing clubs, however, are close to a necessary item on the fisherman’s menu — that is if he also wants to include fish on that same menu.

There are many reasons for joining a club. By associating with enthusiastic fellow fisherman at a higher (and lower) experience level than your own, you can

– discover more about your equipment.

– learn how to choose rods, reels, line, and gear.

– hone your basic skills. Get tips about such things casting, fly selections and determining “where the fish are” in a variety of environmental situations.

– learn how make equipment. Maybe you’d like to make your own Fly Rod from a blank or discover what equipment and materials you need to tie flies.

– uncover the best places to go to catch fish. Fly fishermen will divulge these things to friends they respect.

– plan trips and vacations. A fishing trip is not a trip unless you take people you like and are as enthusiastic as you are.

– help those less experienced. It’s always good to impart what you know. It’s said that a teacher best learns his own craft by teaching others.

– experience the camaraderie that comes with getting together with like minded enthusiasts.

TYPES OF CLUBS

Fly fishing clubs can be national, regional, local, or ones that are strictly internet based. Many cater to beginners or focus on fly tying or other techniques.

Three notable National Clubs are

– Federation of Fly Fishers

– International Women Fly Fishers

– Trout Unlimited

These clubs are dedicated to education and preservation of cold water species and habitats, and are great for educational opportunities.

Regional and local fly fishing clubs such as those indigenous to your state or city may provide a little more of the camaraderie you’re looking for, as well as information that you can apply to waters you’ll find where you live.

Internet clubs may be fun to join as well. You can post to forums and get tips by internet messenger or email.

Clubs you can find in your city or neighborhood may be the best for getting the kind of “hands on” experience you’re looking for. Check with your local bait and tackle shops for information on what’s available, and if you can’t find one, start one. Those same bait and tackle shops will jump at the chance of posting fliers for you and recommending their customers.

NO LONGER ALONE

Each type of club caters to a different need, and you might find it beneficial to join more than one. By doing so, you’ll find you’re not alone.

Even if you’re out in the stream by yourself, you’re surrounded by your friends in the club. When you see that fish rise, when it slams into your fly, your ears will ring with their enthusiastic support –

“Now, don’t horse him in, give him his head!”

“Keep your line tight.”

“Okay, now he’s tired, you can start bringing him in.”

“Keep your rod tip up.”

And finally,

“ALL RIGHT, NICE ONE! HOW BIG IS HE? I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT”

No, with your new-found club friends, you’re definitely no longer alone.

Fly Fishing Tips for Success

Most serious anglers have refined their techniques over time and experience in order to improve their catch.  Reading up on new techniques and products are also good ideas, and so is listening to other angler’s stories.  However, it is still good to remember the Fly Fishing Basics.  Anglers have been catching fish with the basic rod and line for centuries, so going back to the fly fishing fundamentals or the ABC’s of the sport will go a long way in improving not only your fly fishing technique but your catch as well.  So, what are those fly fishing basics we have forgotten?

Getting the Cast Right is Crucial

One of the most important fly fishing basics is the cast.  The cast is probably the most talked about topic among anglers.  A cast that is too forceful will cause the line to hit the water hard which startles the fish.  Even experienced anglers have a hard time switching from a typical cast to a good fly fishing cast.  What usually happens when you fish with a typical rod and reel is that the bait and hook are heavy and they are what pull the line to the designated target.  In fly fishing, it is the opposite.  The fly is almost weightless while the line is heavy.  When casting from a Fly Fishing Rod, the line pulls the fly behind it.  This is why a light and gentle touch is one of the most important fly fishing basics.  Even the most experienced angler forget this technique once in a while so it is important to practice, even when you are not in the water.

How to Practice Casting

In order to keep the gentle touch, practice in your yard.

  • Tie a piece of yarn on where the fly usually is.
  • Cast your rod back and forth and aim for a distance some 10-20 feet away.
  • Work on your cast until you hit your target consistently.
  • Even if you are an experienced angler, working on your cast is a good part of the fly fishing basics.  Just like a good golfer practices his swing all the time, a consistent and accurate cast is just as vital to fly fishermen.

Take Time to Study Currents in the Water

Another oft forgotten fly fishing basic is reading the water and using common sense.  When fishing in water where the water runs fast, you may want to toss your line to the edge as most fish prefer this area so as not to be dragged by the swift current.  During hot summer days, fish may want to hide in shaded areas like fallen trees, so look for good cover.  In fly fishing, the distance between you and the fish is smaller, so you will need a lot of patience so you can stand still and not disturb the fish.  These tips may seem obvious but some anglers forget these fly fishing fundamentals in their rush to cast their line into the water!

Don’t Spend Money on Fancy Equipment to Improve your Performance, Spend Time Developing Your Skills for Free

Most of us get caught up in the technology or product or techniques of fly fishing that we forget to concentrate on the fly fishing basics.  We have to remember that by giving attention to the fly fishing basics, we increase the chance of having fun thereby increasing the chances of having a fun filled fishing experience.

Making Dry Flies For Fly-Fishing – The Art Of Making Life Like Bugs

Fly Fishing is gaining popularity as it is a very interesting sport and there are many people who are participating in this activity. Novices at fly-fishing prefer to purchase all the gear they require including artificial flies. However, once they experience the thrills of the fishing activity, they are hooked on to it. They then think of making their own artificial flies to be continuously involved in the sport during the off-season too. Artificial flies may be a bit tricky to make but some of them are within the ability of most anglers. Some of them are quite easy enough to be made even by children, and this can help to get them interested in the fly-fishing activity.

The earliest use of artificial flies was made by Macedonian anglers, way back in the 2nd century. The Macedonian anglers tied a piece of red wool round the hook. They would tie small feathers to the red wool and make it into an artificial fly. They carried out the fly-fishing quite successfully with the help of these primitive fly-making techniques.

American anglers from the Catskill Mountains in New York began to experiment with the dry-fly designs in the 18th century. They began to design artificial flies to imitate the native insects around the stream that trout feed on. The artificial flies fooled the trout into believing that an edible insect has landed on the water. This discovery encouraged the study of insect hatches to decide which kind of artificial fly would be most successful for fly-fishing at different locations and times.

Artificial flies are comprised of a hook. The hook is disguised to look like a living insect that the targeted fish like to eat; the fish are attracted by the motion or the color used to imitate the live insect. Artificial flies were made by using wool, fur, feathers and other natural materials. However, the artificial flies are now being made using synthetic material. Even though there are a wide variety of synthetic dry flies to choose from, the basic characteristics of fly design have not changed much over the years.

Another new development in the artificial fly design is the barb less hook. Many anglers now practice the catch and release method of fly-fishing wherein the fish that is caught is released back into the water. The barb less hook is easier for the angler to extract from the fish and it ensures that the fish is not injured in the process. There are thousands of designs and styles of artificial flies and a selecting the appropriate one is a challenge for the new anglers.

The materials used to disguise the hook may have changed form natural items to synthetic stuff, over the passage of time. Fur, wool and feathers were the choice of the earlier times. The newer synthetic materials include foam, Mylar, plastic and metals. These synthetic materials are either glued or tied on to the hook in various patterns to attract the fish.

The Best Montana Fly Fishing Rivers

There is no other place on Earth that is better known for its superb fly fishing than Montana. Montana boasts many Fly Fishing Rivers that are quite simply a cut above the rest and an outing to one of these rivers is sure to bring in some trophy sized trout and create some memories that will last a lifetime.

The biggest problem is though, with so many great fly fishing rivers to choose from in Montana, how do you know which ones are the best? While you really cant go wrong in Montana when it comes to fly fishing there are three rivers in particular that are known by fly fishermen everywhere and are consistently getting rave reviews by those who are looking for keepers and those who simply enjoy to catch and release. These three magnificent Montana rivers are as follows:

1. The Flathead River: The Flathead River in Northwestern Montana is the first river that those in the know will bring up every time. Trout fishing in the South Fork of the Flathead is outstanding for two main reasons. The first is the fact that Montana officials have set limits to the fish that can be kept and many fly fishermen therefore struggle to find trout that are small enough to keep. The second reason for the great fly fishing is the fact that the river is somewhat remote and sometimes getting to that perfect spot is a job in itself. However, the fish are not as pressured as they are in other rivers and therefore are very susceptible to many different types of flies.

2. Clark Fork River: The Clark Fork River is located in Western Montana and is, in one word, exciting when it comes to fly fishing. Because the river is very long running at over 300 miles, the lower parts hold great habitats for fish to thrive in and thus provide a great place for fishermen to fish. Fly fishing and regular fishing will be greatly rewarded when a visit to the Clark Fork River is enjoyed.

3. Yellowstone River: The Yellowstone River is in Southwest Montana and originates of course in Yellowstone National Park. Because the Yellowstone River stretches such a big portion of Montanas landscape fly fishermen never really struggle with catching trout, but rather where they will begin and which trout they will count towards their limit. Add in the unbelievably beautiful scenery that surrounds the Yellowstone River and it is a true cant miss combination.

While there are many other rivers in the state of Montana that will produce many strikes to your fly fishing rig, these three will offer fish time and time again. All three also offer a good variety of Fly Fishing Guides who can be hired by you or your group to ensure that you are led to the perfect trout hot spot.

No matter which one of the three Montana Rivers you decide to visit you are sure to get your fly fishing fix well taken care of. Just as other states are known for certain activities, when it comes to great fly fishing, there is nothing that compares to the wonderful rivers of Montana.

Fly Fishing Gift

fly fishing gift
Unique gift for my Dad?

I have always bought my Dad the most unusual gifts…In fact, he LOVES the presents I buy him and saves my gift for last because they are always so fun to open. But this year I am at a serious loss of what to get him. He has retired so cool tools are out since he doesn’t need them anymore…He doesn’t get out of the house much…He has been diagnosed as diabetic so my previous gifts of “desert of the month” and cake of the month” club memberships are no longer a good idea…and my budget is under 30 bucks.

In the past I have bought him things like hand held scanners, as seen on TV type stuff, a watch that doubles as a universal remote control, a monster sized remote control (since he is always losing his), an electronic weather station. Dad loves electronic gadgets. Can someone suggest something cool and unusual? I was thinking of getting him one of the Coleman Fly Pens (a mini Fishing pole) but I would have to order it and I’m running out of time obviously.

Ideas please?

get him a nintendo wii it has lots of fun games and it will keep him active

Fly Fishing Guides

Saltwater Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is fast catching up as an adventure sport and hobby of sorts. Fly fishing is quite different from still fishing as fly fishing needs more technique and provides better game too. In fly fishing, Saltwater Fly Fishing and freshwater fly fishing at the two demarcated zones. Obviously freshwater fly fishing is when you are fly fishing in lakes and rivers whereas saltwater fly fishing is done in the open seas.

Salt Water Fly Fishing is actually quite different from freshwater fly fishing. Besides the place where fly fishing happens, saltwater fly fishing uses larger sized tackle and hence requires more strength and the experience to handle it. This is because of several factors which include the size of the fish in the sea which are considerably bigger. Secondly, you will have to cast longer lines in the open seas and the tides and wind always play spoil sport in the sea.

Fly Fishing Guides will repeatedly tell one to spend a lot on the equipment and specifically on the fishing rod and to spend less on the reel. The fishing rod obviously is the most important aspect and a good rod is essential. One does not necessarily have to go for a high tech high priced rod, but spending on a good rod would be a good idea. As for the reel, the amount you want to spend on it can depend on what you allocate for the rod and reel budget. But do take care to buy a reasonably good quality reel that is saltwater useable. There is no point buying a reel that gets rusted or corroded in saltwater easily. Even with a saltwater reel, one must take good care of the reel and wash it after use every time so it’s not exactly a maintenance free device either.

Fly fishing guides have a lot of recommendations for a person who plans to start of salt water fly fishing. Salt water fly fishing clearly is a little harder and dangerous than fly fishing in freshwaters and hence additional preparation is necessary. For starters, when salt water fly fishing, it is always good to have a spare rod in hand. The weather conditions and the fish themselves will play major roles in stressing the rod and hence an extra is always essential. Secondly always have secondary reel loaded with a line and also hold a wet tip which will allow for quick changeovers. A stripping guard is mandatory on your stripping finger. This is even truer in saltwater where a rope burn could occur in your fingers when you are not prepared to release the line in quick reaction. Injuring your finger and exposing it to salty conditions are not desirable at all during salt water fly fishing. Safety is essential like any Fly Fishing Guide says and hence if you plan on salt water fishing off shore, always wear Fly Fishing Vests that are reflective, waterproof and visible at all times. Similarly when going into the sea, it is always essential that you check weather conditions, tides and have all those details and maps on you to assist you on your fly fishing trip.

Enjoying Free Bass Fishing Games

If you happen to read this during the off-season for fishing, then you must be really missing the waters. Well, you can’t go back soon. Unless you can fly to a secluded fishing destination outside the country just to follow that hobby. If it’s winter where you are, you’ve go to fly somewhere else where the sun is always shining and the fish are always swimming. If that’s not possible, then you might as well try your hand at the free bass fishing games available online. This is the next best activity you can enjoy, since the fishing port is closed this time of the year. Use these games to hone your skills while you wait for the fishing season to reopen.

These free bass fishing games are well like by gamers, fishing fans or otherwise. Non-fishing enthusiasts can find enjoyment in these games too. This is because you don’t really have to learn the basics of fishing just to play the game. Furthermore, you can use the game to show you how real fishing is done over the waters. Try your hand in this fishing game and you’ll know for sure if you can get into the real hobby or not. Here, you get the hang of the sports while enjoying the game.

With free bass fishing games, you won’t struggle with real fish. What you do is you try to beat a computer program. While this may not seem appealing to some sports fishers, it is the closest you can get to the thrills of fishing during the off season. If you haven’t tried it yet, get the console and play the game. You might just find the fun that you’re looking for all along. Let the game hone your skills and techniques. If you were able to beat the best records in the game, you might as well join the tournament next season.

A good collection of free bass fishing games easily downloadable over the internet are the In-Fisherman Freshwater Thropies and the Rapala Pro Fishing game made by Activision. Rapala creates the best fishing lures in today’s market. And this game carrying their trademark follows their old tradition of creating only the best. The Rapala Pro Fishing game provides the best graphics in all of the fishing games available today. You can choose which boat you’d like to sail on. There are bass boats and air boats available. You can also choose to have girls accompanying as you fish over the waters.

There’s another good set of free bass fishing games that can be downloaded over the internet today. These are the Pro Bass Fishing series. There are two versions available and they were released in 2002 and 2003. In this game, you can play in a networked mode with your other friends. It is also possible to play the game through GameSpy, an online gaming portal.

These are the best free bass fishing games today. So if you want to take fishing to the next level, try the computer console. It could just all you need to keep you occupied throughout the days where fishing is not yet allowed.

enviornmentalists are the cause of the wildfires?

it only makes sense. I say this because back in 2001 in the state of washington 4 firefighters were killed because the were trapped and trying to get help. But, they couldnt because they had to get permission for a helicopter to get water out of this stream, for fear that some fish might die. needless to say these firefighters died. It was the enviormentalists fault for this because they own the liberal democrats who passed these stupid laws. So now we have these fires here in california and i am sure they wouldnt have been so bad had people been able to clear out alot of the over growth. But im sure the enviornmentalist said no for fear of killing some stupid fly or bug or something.

http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3b6823b633ba.htm

gee, isnt anyone reading the article?

You’re falsely exploiting the death of four young fire crew members in Washington to ignorantly try to blame the Southern California wildfires on environmentalists?

That’s sickening and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I’ve worked repeatedly with people that were on that fire and there is no way a helicopter could have pulled water from the creek (it wasn’t a stream) that you’re referring too. In fact, several of the fire crew’s members were able to reach that creek for shelter after the fire they were suppressing blew up.

If you’d done your research you’d know that the Incident Commander is facing criminal charges (rightly-or-wrongly) for neglect on this and that poor communications was a key factor in those fatalities.

If you’re going to use FOX News as a source, try to find information they themselves haven’t already admitted was inaccurate.

The vast bulk of the fires in Southern California are on public lands. The Sierra Club after the 2003 Cedar Fire had even helped push through legislation to get homeowners throughout the region to expand their brush clear zone from 30-feet to 100-feet.

To let you and “Stalagmite” know, the USDA Forest Service (their is no “National Forest Service” Stalagmite — do your research), National Park Service (NPS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had control or influence over about 22,000 acres of the 400,000+ acres burned or burning in the 15 fires in Southern California. Yet all of those agencies contributed significant resources and effort to fighting those fires — regardless of land “issues”.

These fires are the results of three key factors converging at once to create a “perfect” firestorm: several severe seasons of regional drought; exceptionally high Santa Ana winds over several days; and very, very low humidity over a prolonged period. The area was basically a huge tinderbox.

My heart goes out to those that lost their homes in this disaster, but the fact is that ground fuel and overgrowth — that could have been cleared out by residents — played a big part in how massive these fires became.

A final note: Neither the Forest Service, the NPS, the DNR, or the BLM have engaged in “absolute fire suppression” in decades. Fire management is still a difficult science to grasp, but progress is being made. You should take some time to read about that.

I think you owe an apology to the families that lost loved ones at the Thirty Mile Fire and the crews that fought there. There is no excuse for what you said about that incident.

Edit: Stalagmite: I’m not confused at all — I know what each department is called, the purpose they have and how they are structured. After all, I’m the one that got the name right!

There is a huge difference between learning more about an event and exploiting that event for your own agenda. It’s very clear what this case is….

Fishing In Deep Waters? Don’t Forget Your Fly Fishing Waders

You may remember getting reprimanded as a kid for leaving your cycle in the backyard overnight or being corrected and punished for forgetting to put your playthings away after you finished using them; well, that is all a part of growing up and a memory that is sure to be common to lots of fishermen too. We mention this here today because of the need for the right equipment for anglers to make that perfect fishing trip more enjoyable – and learning to take care of fishing gear is part of every smart fisherman’s safeguard to providing more fun once you’ve invested in a pair of good quality Fly Fishing Waders that protect you and let you venture into deeper waters to maximize scope of getting a catch! You may recall the disappointment you’ve felt as a kid on leaving action hero toys on a duty posting outdoors and found them ruined by a local tabby – well, this further emphasizes the importance of looking after your belongings, including your fly fishing waders, after they’ve serviced you on the last fishing trip – just as you would care and protect your other things.

Care and maintenance of your expensive or budget fly fishing waders is very crucial to making the next fishing trip a memorable one – for the right reasons – as nothing is more a kill-joy on an outdoor sports vacation than knowing your equipment is the wrong kind or not up to the adventure! Many a time, even the less costly pair of fly fishing waders can put a dent in your fishing gear budget, as good quality gear doesn’t come cheap – even on sales and mark-down prices; learning to take care of them is the only way to ensure you have secured your hundred dollar plus worth for many more Fishing Trips to come and done the needful by keeping them clean and dry after you’ve finished using them.

The importance of protecting your fly fishing waders cannot be stressed enough: this is a vital part of any Fly Fisherman’s essential gear and is a shield from sharp rocks, uneven or rough ground conditions besides allowing you to wade into deeper waters while you stay warm and dry – without risking your clothes getting soiled too! Therefore, as long as you are scouting for better fishing holes and need to skim the waters for your catch, you need to depend on a good quality pair of fly fishing waders that assist you in your job; take care not to puncture them, though, as this is hard to mend. If you check for holes in your fly fishing waders when you return from the trip and clean and put them away, you won’t have to learn the hard way – as others do – about frustration at ruined gear on the next trip!

Experts recommend that just depending on a higher price tag on the fly fishing waders you buy is no way to guarantee how durable they are and therefore it is very important to use them with care and double-check for any faults, tears or leaks when you return from a fishing trip, besides of course, cleaning and drying them before storing them away. Shine a flashlight on the inside of the waders in a darkened area to check for holes or submerge them in water while applying pressure from the outside – you’ll know you’re in trouble if small water droplets form! Get a patch to mend these punctures ASAP – so your waders are ready and fixed for the next outing.

If you hang up your waders when you return from a trip (for drying thoroughly) and follow the above tips, you can count on many years of service from your waders!

Fly Fishing Gear- Top 10 Essentials For Fly Fishing

With an apparently unending array of gear and gadgets, fly fishing seems to be a varied and interesting sport. Most of the available options could be confusing to anyone who is new to Fly fishing. Anyone with a flair for fishing should know the important accessories about it. The 10 common pieces concerning Fly Fishing Gear include a reel, Fly Fishing Rod, line, files, leader, waders, net, clippers, vest and sunglasses.

Fly fishing rod

This rod is one of the mandatory equipments for fly fishing. These rods are usually different when compared to regular and conventional Fishing Rods and are designed in unique manner. It would allow casting the fly and fly line. Rods today are often constructed using types of graphite compounds. Many of the rods are still structured from bamboo or fiberglass. The Fly rods are usually categorized based upon weights of line they are structured to be used with.

Reels

The Fly fishing reels essentially, are less significant than the rods. Unlike conventional fishing, along with fly fishing one does not reel in the fish. The Fly fishing methods involve stripping the line with free hand. Quite many fly fishing reels actually are of primitive designs and hence not so very expensive. Anglers commonly “palm” the reel for creating the drag, than relying upon internal drag mechanisms within the reel.

Line

The Fly fishing line has been specially designed for such style of fishing. Fly fishing line is considerably heavy compared to traditional fishing line. It is often tapered and designed for floating. Some lines are designed to sink, though. Some anglers attach backer line in between fly fishing line and reel so as to increase the line available.

Leader

The leader is a monofilament, clear line which attaches to the extreme end of fly fishing line. Additionally, the fly is tied to the leader at the end. This leader is further tapered down into a narrow diameter towards the forward end. Leader matches more with the traditional fishing line.

The Flies

They are available in huge assortments of designs and styles. The dry flies are designed so that they float up in the water, nymphs and wet flies are structured for submerging, and few other flies are made to partially submerge. Flies could also be implied as attractive or imitative. Imitative flies are deliberated to imitate or manifest like a specific insect. On the other hand, attractive flies are structured to attract the fists not looking towards any specific natural food source.

The Waders

Waders are optional when you fish in warm water. But a few anglers go fly fishing in cold water streams to find waders enormously essential. Some popular wader styles currently include waders with waterproof lining and neoprene waders. Neoprene waders work very well in the cold water stream and serve in keeping the angler warm. The waders having a waterproof lining prove to be convenient and breathable when one goes hiking flanking a stream.

Net

A net is essential equipment for fly fishing. As fly fishing is often done standing in the waters, it could be not very easy to hunt a fish without good nets. Nets always have a hook attached. This would help the net so that it could be hooked on the anglers’ vest or waders. A net is particularly important in cases when the angler is trying to catch and release fishing.

Fishing Vest

As fly fishing is always tried in the water, a fishing vest seems to be a near-essential equipment piece. Vests would allow you in keeping essential gear and tools handy and neat as and when you find its necessity.

Clippers

Clippers are quite useful for clipping the line when you change the flies. You would rarely notice any Fly Fisherman with no clippers in their pocket or vest.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are pieces of personal gear which you would never want to forget. They would keep the sun to not reach your eyes and also protect them from stray fishing hooks. Polarized and good quality sunglasses would also assist in a better vision while you are out near the stream. Most anglers would also append a sunscreen and a hat to the catalog of personal gear which is essential.

There are other pieces of gadgets and gear which are available for every fly fisherman. The above mentioned ten items are perhaps among the most essential ones required for a successful and fun outing.

Here are some of the fishing outfitters you can get in touch with in Canada:

George Lake Camp Outfitting

This outfitter is located near La Ronge in Saskatchewan on George Lake. There are 4,000 acres of crystal clear George Lake waters to enjoy and plenty of fish to catch, including lake trout, whitefish and northern pike. If you prefer, you can also hire one of their local guides for a small fee. The outfitter rents out several 14 footer aluminum fishing boats so you can venture out on your own in search of fish.

The camp itself is in a beautiful location and can only be accessed using a float plane. The camp offers lakefront accommodations complete with sandy beaches. If you like a more secluded and private fishing getaway, this is the outfitter you should get in touch with.

Deschutes River Fly Fishing

deschutes river fly fishing

Fly Fishing Oregon’s Fall River

You may not have seen an uglier imitation of a natural bug in your life, and hopefully you never will. In fact, the world’s leading entomologist would’ve had a hard time determining what I was trying to duplicate with this fly. It was by far the sloppiest attempt at the traditional elk hair caddis pattern to date. Purely an exercise in beginning Fly Tying, and one of the first to come off of my assembly line known as a vice.

It was a combination of ego, sentimentality and hopeful romantic fantasy that allowed it into my fly box. Wouldn’t it be something if it worked and I actually landed a fish with my first attempt at fly tying? A lost cause you would think while looking at it. But, it felt good just have it sit in my f
